Help! Accidental Lovebird Owner!

Hey all,

So I am minding my business today and a litter Fischer's Lovebird flies in through the window and became my friend. Im serious, the little guy flew in and immediately perched on my shoulder and was comfortable moving to my finger.

I did a bit of research to learn what it is and some basic knowledge of how to take care of it but I am a bit lost and have some questions for anyone willing to answer them.

1. This is a pet right? It's definitely not native to my area and its super comfortable around people. I am going to put up fliers tomorrow.
2. (this came out as more than one question) What do I do? I got a little cage and food/water for the little guy but what am I getting in to? Does the cage have to be a certain size? I know they are super sociable, is it sad its not around its "flock"?
3. If I end up keeping it (probably not a neighbor already said he would take it) do I have to get him a mate? Or will he not be cool with other birds?
4. What kind of things do they like for toys?
5. His feathers are ruffled that means he is stressed right? What can I do to help with that?
6. He is eating/drinking/sleeping pretty regularly. What kind of schedule do they usually keep?
7. Do I put a towel over the cage at night? I'm sorry if this is dumb.

Any additional advice or things I've undoubtedly have missed are very welcome.

Thanks

Wow! What a friendly little guy (or girl)! Being that tame it most certainly is a pet, and surely somebody will be missing their pal.

It's good that you are trying to find it's owner. Whereabouts in the world are you located? Maybe somebody here can point you in the right direction.

Be sure when you look for its owner, don't post pictures or give any details. If somebody comes forward, ask them to describe the bird's colour and defining features and even give proof that it's theirs. There are many cruel people in the world who would just want to sell it on for some quick cash, or worse...

If you are just holding onto him temporarily, a small cage with perches, food, water and maybe a toy is enough. If nobody comes forward you will have to upgrade.

@Zara can help with more specific lovebird-related questions. Good luck finding an owner! :)

Congratulations on being adopted by the little guy. I hope you find the owners but if not, seriously consider keeping him since he picked you! We'd love to see pictures. THis is a great forum with many knowledgeable people to help you out.

Hey!

Thank you for the response! I am located in Sant Cugat which is a neighborhood outside of Barcelona, if anyone has heard anything I would really appreciate it.

I didn't even think about that, thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for all the advice, right now finding its owner is my number one priority!

Smart little bird to seek out a friendly human! I hope s/he is an accidental escapee - tragically, some birds are deliberately released because their human can no longer care for them. I hope that someone is missing their feathered friend and searching for them.

Do post here: Lost and Found Parrots / Birds - Parrot / Bird Reporting and Alerting Register

Also post on facebook, NextDoor, twitter etc. I would also advise calling vets in case the bird and their human were a client. As @Khizz says, try to keep identifying information to a minimum on any flyers or social media posts. Don't even post any photos here.. There are unscrupulous people out there who want a free pet or will try to sell the bird for some quick cash or, worse, will try to feed the bird to a pet snake or otherwise mistreat it.

It was pretty awesome, I felt like a Disney princess.

I would keep it but I have a cat and I'm not sure how he would be around the little bird. I am helping my mother out with a few things and it happened at her place.

For the time being I have named him Barry the Lovebird :)

I have birds and cats and it's not ideal, but we make it work. It requires a ton of caution.

I have a cat a dog and a bird the dog and the cat are in agreement that the bird is not a family member. I just watch the dog and cat, and bird. Sometimes my bird is the instigator. Luckily I have always been there in time to say hey to the cat. Or dog.

Is the bird pale green with small darker patches, red beak, white/light flight feathers?

Edit, I have 5 listings so far for missing birds that could be a match based on location and Agapornis. Could you inbox me a picture?
In the meantime a bag of semillas para periquitos from the Mercadona will do for food.

My cat has killed a bunch of mice, he is not low energy at all. I have had other cats that I would consider it with but not my current dude. I don't want to put the little bird in that environment as I would never feel comfortable taking it out. Plus my cat Loki would be tortured wanting to get after it all day everyday (I live in a big loft so not even rooms to divide).

I don’t have advice on the rest of your questions, but I have two cats and two birds and we don’t have a lot of issues. The cats mostly ignore the birds, but I don’t discourage gentle investigation of them in their cages (swiping is an immediate separation, cage or no). The birds are NEVER out in the same room as the cats. The birds are in the bedroom and cats wander in and out but get kicked out and the door shut when birds come out.

I think you are right here to not keep the bird in this case. Even with a multiple room apartment it's not easy to keep them separate, so in a loft it would be impossible without just keeping the bird caged up.

Do let us know if you find the owner, or what the outcome is :)

Lmao that actually sounds like its right out of a Disney movie, and I died laughing imagining how that must've played out :laughing6:. She's very smart to have reached out to a human, and very lucky to have found someone as kind as you. Anyways, wishing you and Barry the Lovebird the best of luck.
