I was concerned about temperature as winter rapidly approaches, our
last bird a Mitred Conure was one of the most cold tolerant birds
there is. In fact some of these birds that used to get imported into
JFK airport escaped and formed a flock that lives wild year round in
Queens and parts of Brooklyn.
They are known as the parrots of Flushing and have been living there
wild since the 70`s. But our baby Pumpkin is another story, so I`ve
been looking into ways of keeping her warm and have sent for a couple
of medium sized heated perches.
The best deal I could find on these was through Petco online using a
coupon I got from Coupon Cabin.com. Even on Ebay I couldn`t find a
better deal than this perch, the reviews about this perch that I read on
Amazon and the Petco site were mostly raves from bird owners that
swear by them.

Even with the 10% savings and free shipping these things are a little
pricey, but they work as well as advertised and they are cheap compared
to a visit to the avain vet with a sick Caique.
I can`t say enough about these perches, I think they are pure genius in how they warm a bird, extremely safe and effective. The gentle heat varies up and down the perch so the bird chooses the temperature it likes.
Our Pumpkin figured them out pretty quick and she loves them, sleeps on it every night and after a bath she finds the warmest spot and stays there preening herself until dry.

I really have never heard a bad thing about these perches. I mean you have to be smart and hide the cord but I have never heard anyone have anything but good things.

Well they are pricey ~ ouch!

Ive considered getting one, but it simply doesnt get cold enough here to justify the $40. We keep the house pretty warm so its not to big of an issue. If I lived farther North though, I think it would be a must!

I use heated perches. My Congo Izzy tells me when it's time to plug it is. He'll cock his head, looking at the perch and tell it "I'm cold. I'm co-old. Feet.. CO-OLD!".

I have to agree with Kristy, I read nothing but raves about these Thermo Perches before I bought them and I totally concur with all the good things said about them. I always check her during the night and I always find her sound asleep on this perch, usually on the warmest spot.
They wound up costing about $36 a piece from Petco.com after the discount coupon was applied. Pricey yes, but cheap insurance to protect her health, a trip to the avian vet is where the numbers really add up.

I have to disagree a bit. The shape of the perches are not great for their feet and they spend many hours on them every night. There have been cases of bumblefoot. The same as giving any bird uniformly round dowels. They are always sitting on the same pressure spots on their feet which can cause sores.

Just be sure to check the bottoms of their feet often to avoid that.

I prefer naturally shaped perches and heating the cage a different way.

Just so you know. :)

not disagreeing with you John - you know I respect your opinions

the perches are not uniform in diameter, they resemble the ortho perches on the parrot towers -- are they still bad?

I know the dowel perches are a big no-no because of the uniformity in shape

just curious

Hm. I've never seen those. The only ones I've seen were just a piece of PVC like pipe with a heating element and a cord on it. Good to know!! :)

this is what mine look like, glad we were talking about something different (would have hated to take them out  , but would have if they were bad for them!)
