:crycry: G'day all , coming to you live from Australia.
A quick update on ELLIE is that once I ended up putting her in a cage and only letting her out every now and then she laid an egg in the bottom of the cage and after I took it away it seemed to help her in stopping.
Then (it seemed overnight) she has put on a terrible lot of weight and is so dis-interested in everything and she will practically sit anywhere and sleep the day away and that is not my mile a minute ELLIE.
She then got taken to the local vet as I thought she might be egg-bound. This resulted in being told that nothing is wrong with her. (and she is perfectly happy ????)
The only explanation that was offered was she miight have a slight hormone imbalance that she will get through . Any suggestions would be appreciated as it still worries me to see her looking so SAD.
I cannot hang around, be back tomorrow. STEPHEN WALKER

Hi Stephen, I'm sorry to hear that Ellie isn't doing so well. :( I would also be concerned by her sudden lethargy and weight gain.

Was the vet that you took her to an avian vet or just a regular dogs&cats vet? Did they do any bloodwork or imaging?

Hey Stephen, did you happen to inform the vet of all the eggs Ellie has laid recently or only of the one she just laid? I am also curious if it was an avian vet you saw for Ellie or a regular dog and cat vet as often the dog and cat vets are really not qualified to help and should just say so but that is not always the case.

Hey everyone, thanks for your concern, because of where I am(I am not in prison . it is a treatment cenntre as I could not cope in the community after serving a 19 year sentence) I had to rely on a staff member for ELLIE to be taken to the vet and for her to be sent back saying she was a happy and healthy bird is preposterous, only to mention apart from being over weight that she was not egg bound. She was not over weight and it was obvious to any body that she was not in a good way. She could not even step up to her water container without falling over.(To me it was like a bird version of motor neuron disease). And to return her in the same carry cage that was littered with runny, bloody pooh is negligence in my book. She died that night and I CANNOT STOP CRYING. I told the vet on the phone that whatever it took that finances were not a problem. They only charged me $80, but I find it reprehensible they could send her back in good conscience. I must go , but I will talk tomorrow.:needhug::crycry2:

It was a regular vet, but surely they could not (in good conscience ) say that she was a happy and healthy bird. I do not want to plat the blame game but my god they knew how concerned I was and I wonder if they even took her out of her cage. I am so angry about it. Hey, do you know where I can get a very young (hand tamed) Kakariki as I need something to fill the huge void. Steve

Before getting another bird, I would suggest first figuring out how you can ensure that your new bird will have access to timely avian vet care in case this situation happens again. Find a suitable avian vet nearby, talk with the people at your treatment center, and come up with a plan. Maybe you could hire someone to take the bird instead of relying on the treatment center people to do it, so you can be sure that your bird gets the care they need. Having a plan in place in case a health emergency happens again will be a great assurance :)

Earlier the vet said of a specialist vet (avian) that was in Ballarat which I said if necessary to send her .I ALSO ARRANGED FOR THE LOCAL VET TO BE IN TOUCH WITH A SPESCIALIST IN MELBOURNE,as the person in melbourne was prepared to do it by video connect. Thanks so much for your concern as I am not thinking too clearly at present.

Not sure where exactly you are in Melbourne but there were are a few avian vets in Melbourne a couple of years back when I was looking for one so you most likely don’t have to travel to Ballarat or Bendigo if you’re in Melbourne. Burwood and Scoresby I think have bird vets and I’m pretty sure there is at least one more somewhere there (haven’t checked for a long time).

I’m sorry, I don’t know of anyone with any kakarikis I don’t think.

Where did you get Ellie from? Can they maybe help you?
