Both needing homes, I was warned that Chico, the Panama Amazon, was especially aggressive towards female humans. That was certainly true!

He’s fine with me now – it took some months – but I still wouldn’t ask him to step up on my hand.

It complicates things that he is pretty much blind as well as disabled through bad arthritis.

Despite a suspected stroke, he still seems to be enjoying life. Chico is around 56+ years old now.

On the other hand I was told Bobbie, the Red-lored Amazon, loved females although she speaks with a male's voice.

She couldn't fly when she arrived, but using the sofa as a landing pad and watching the others fly, she taught herself in a few months.

She loves to hang out near me. Bobbie is around 21 or 22 years old.

Like Chico she is very food motivated!

Happy Gotcha Day, Feathered Friends!

you are obviously a well seasoned and experienced parrot parent.

But I will offer this, im seeing a lot of on the smaller end perches. ( you might have plenty bigger not shown in pictures!) But much larger perches ( make tge ok sign then spread out your index and thumb by 2-3 inches) that size for your size parrots will offer the most support to feet and joints. Especially for arthritis. Often these guys do development arthritis from years of not having large supportive perches. Heck you could even offer a log. Because I've found a lack of good size perches when shopping, I've cut my own from burd safe sources. I'm lucky to have crepe myrtle trees. So I cut some arm size branches , even my budgies enjoy resting on them.

Thanks very much for the great advice Pixiebeak! Would love to see some examples of your set up. Unfortunately that's as big as they get for Chico as he can't open his feet any wider - likely comes from having the same plastic perch for 40+ years in his old home.

I understand. My old girl quaker rescue has some wing restrictions from never using them, tho improved greatly more than vet or I expected with a few years of flying and her allowance of some physical therapy. She is also sadly permanently hunched after years of cage so small she couldn't stand up.

Have you offered large ones :? And they were never selected to stand on?

Poor little feets

Your poor Quaker. Bobbie is similar but not so bad. She still hunches but she learned how to fly quite fast as I am guessing she flew in her 1st home (I'm home #3, although she also had a year in a pet shop). Her flying keeps improving.

This is probably the best pic of Chico's feet. I didn't take the pic - it was after he was saved from being euthanized for his aggression and loudness.
