Jogging around the block
So my daughter calls me at work on the last day of 2019, New Years Eve, crying and telling me that when she was walking out her front door, Gary (her Parakeet) landed on top of her head and before she could get the door closed and he flew off. Mind you, I am at work, trying my best to stay calm. She went looking for him and left food and water outside before the left for work. When Gary was with me on the last New Years Eve, he and Keoki did fine. I turned on the tv's so that there was noise throughout my home, to help muffle all the craziness going on out side (New Years and 4th of July). Here in Hawaii, they are BIG on fire works, and those M80's that make the big ol BOOM sounds that rattle your teeth. So last year was fine, both bird were safe and sound in their cages. This time was a different story and Gary was going to be outside, by himself, on one of the nosiest nights of the year. So while at work, I placed 4 ads, Craigslist, Maui Humane Society, NextDoor, and MauiWatch. Thankfully, I have recent pics of both birds with their identifying marks. When I got off work, my husband and I went looking for Gary before it got dark, and then again at dusk. We couldn't find him or hear him call. All of us were devastated On New Years day, my husband went looking for him again. My daughter was convinced he was gone or dead because he was probably so scared, and by now he was hungry and thirsty. I told her that birds are smarter than you think. Because he is very tame, when he gets hungry he will probably find a human. She wasn't convinced, but I wanted to keep it positive because she felt so bad. And the people who live here are proactive when it comes to reuniting lost pets with their owners. I had hope.
Friday, still no sign of Gary. I got home from work and checked my email. Lo and behold 2 emails, from two different people. One was from a Tim and the other was from a Michelle. I called Tim, got no answer and I couldn't leave a message because his VM was full. So then I called Michelle, who said that she thinks that the bird they have is Gary and that her boyfriend "Tim" is keeping him in their bathroom. I was like and so happy. She us gave her their address, and my husband and I picked up Gary. He wasn't too far from home, just in the housing tract behind our apartments. Tim said that about 4 hrs earlier, he saw Gary land on his light fixture outside. When he approached him, Gary flew right to him and landed on his shoulder and knew it was someones pet. He called the Maui Humane Society and filled out a report, which matched the one I filled out and they contacted my daughter (who was at work). Then they looked on craigslist and saw my ad, knew it was Gary by the description and photos.
Gary was so happy to see us. He readily went in to the travel cage. When we got him home, first he ate and drank, then he slept for a long time. We are so thrilled he is okay, back home safe and sound. My daughter couldn't believe she got her bird back. We are all so happy. Love this boy.
