Unfortunately Crikey succumbed to an illness the other day, I believe accelerated by the heartbreak of losing her best friend Custard. She lasted just over 3 weeks in a world without Custard - 3 more weeks than I was expecting if I'm honest as she wasn't in great body condition to begin with.
I rehomed Crikey as a 1 year old 'male' (clearly female!) in 2021, she was living by herself in a small cage and hadn't been fed enough so was stunted. She had scaley mites and clearly no social skills. She was the biggest trouble maker I have ever had in my flock - she loved to bully, wind the others up and then gaslight them and beg for food. She continued to beg from food from any bird, no matter how much older than them she was and loved to throw alllll the seed out for attention. She loved show tunes, destroying greens, biting toes. She had some nasty bites back which meant that her toes were a bit gnarly but didn't affect her in any other way. She outlived 3 husbands (Joey, Billy and Cosmo) despite the cute photos in this post, she was a terrible wife. Eventually found a kinship with Custard. They remained my flock for 3 years together, managed to get to the point where I would let them out at the same time but had to keep a close eye on them but she didn't seem to mind. Last week she landed on my hand willingly, I'll never forget that moment. It's so quiet without her, I'm glad she rallied enough last week that she was back to her old self for a bit - a complete menace.
She's now no longer in any pain and is reunited with Custard - when I came back from the vets after putting her to sleep, there was the most beautiful rainbow and sunset - the sunset had green and yellow in it. Fly free my girl.
