There are multiple threads

So u have the pack o bird if I read correctly (I'm very tired so I might have gotten confused as I started in the middle of the thread where it took me and then realized I missed half of it ) anyway I'm worried about the mesh on those is it strong enough if she uses the can opener to try and get out? They can't see out except the sides of im looking at it correctly so would the bubble bag thing be better? I saw the shoulder one but I think I would have a tizzy trying to keep that on. Eventually we will be doing the harness but that'll take time so something for now would be better while we work on it. Or maybe one for the colder months that's hard and warmer can be the mesh one? I just want her safe and not lost. I want to be able to take her places even when it's cold but the getting to and from the car/building I would think the enclosed one would be ok and not loose to much heat before we were inside? I live in Missouri so we get really hot and really cold. It's a great time of year right now where she can go walking with me and the puppy in the backpack. I think she deserves it after being in prison for all those years for nothing. A backpack will give voodoo time out as well (he's a gcc who's tame but sooooo tempermental he's been my hardest bird I've ever had but the most talkative as of yet and I've had a jenday, nanday, goffins cockatoo but they really didn't talk a ton but were well more docile and manner towards me than he is sometimes). I was going to get him one several times but just haven't really decided which one and I finally saw a sun in one in person at the vet last week so I was going to finally do it since theirs seemed to love it. I really like the idea of them being able to go places and get to see things and it doesn't really have to be a special place just doing errands would be something they could go along to usually and get some extra time with me. Also the harness thing when is a good time to start letting her see it and such? I don't want to do to soon but it also would be something that I want her used to seeing and being around so when we finally get to the point of starting the training to put on we have that part down. I kinda think training birds and the blind deaf dog I had were fairly similar in a lot of ways where he was desensitized to things to avoid the oops things like picking him up randomly with only a quick tap before in case he was in immediate danger I could grab him without him being terrified/aggressive. I would like to know if being able to train a very quick pickup would be a thing that can be done in case of emergency as well now that I think of it. My other birds before these would allow pretty much anything but they were well different personalities and although Elvira seems to have the temeperment of my goffins I'm older and more into keeping myself intact than I ever really worried about when I had her sometimes I wonder how I ever got that lucky to have such amazing birds before and never have problems because things like these forums and reliable info weren't readily available at least to my knowledge then.

I’ve always been able to quick grab my birds if they’re in trouble. I think they know it and freeze for a second to allow me to handle them as they wouldn’t otherwise like.

For example, when Jasper goes on an adventure in my apartment, I can usually either grab her or she’ll step right up off of the floor. If it takes much time or thought then she starts to balk but if I’m quick she’ll just hop up. If Willow is distracted by something scary, I just pick him up and go, or hold him to my shirt and get out of whatever situation. (Like unexpected presence of dogs.)

Yeah I have dogs and a cat that is like super kitty I got her from what used to be outdoors then a shop cat so she's got a great prey drive (got rid of all the mice in 2 weeks that have apparently been here for years before I got the place and y tenants left) great for me bad for the birds. I'm extremely careful but I never know what could happen. I mean I'm definitely not against being ripped open for the sake of any of them not being hurt but I prefer we all come out unscathed I would say that sounds about right though because they know us well enough to know we don't just do that and they know when they're in danger being prey animals. That made me feel better.

Are you close to St. Louis? We have a parrot club here.
We're in Kansas City so about 4 hrs away I think it is from STL. A parrot club sounds really neat! Idk if we have anything like that here. I'll have to look. It would get us out of the house at least I don't get out much so I need an excuse really. That's y I'm getting the backpack I need an excuse I suppose. My friend tells me I can't be sitting here staring at the walls all day.... Well I don't I spend time with my little zoo I guess I need human interaction though outside of the guy I work with.

Ok so we're close to the day where we get the go ahead on Elvira being in the same area as the conures so once we get that call and I get her in her cage in the same room how do I keep them from flying onto each others cages? I don't want anyone missing a toe but I definitely want to let them out like I usually do. Any yes I keep everyone in flight for their safety since other animals live here so they'll definitely have the ability to get there. Elvira can half fly .... She's like she's got lead in her butt though so we go down quick I assume from her probably not being able to stretch her wings all these years. I also enjoy the fly by from voodoo cause he's a brat and if I don't give him the attention he wants while I'm sitting here he flies by like he's in an air show he likes to irritate. His favorite thing is to stand on my phone while I'm looking at it and usually with a butt in the way.

Vet just called and got the results back from part of her blood work. She's got some high cholesterol but not terrible she said and her liver function is not normal but she said the way the results are if we get her off of the seeds and bad food she should hopefully get to normal levels all around and be good there. Still waiting on the other test to come back next week but so far she said she's pretty healthy!!! I'm so glad! Hopefully the other one comes back normal and she'll be golden! Any tips on how to get her to change easier to zupreem would be great but she eats roudybush so if she doesn't change it's not the end of the world. I got her some size appropriate ones because I know that my conures prefer the bigger ones anyway (I think they just like to hold them) so if she never eats them then they'll just have more than enough I actually might try to give her some of theirs and see if she may e prefers smaller ones just to see. Vet said either are great brands so not a concern as long as we stop feeding the other stuff and we'll go back in about 3 months to get a new test done and see how she's doing with the change of diet. She seems very healthy and I figured out the corner thing. It was because she didn't want to be on that perch (her feet looked good so she was pro doing it to stay off the sand and keep her feet from hurting because she's not really been standing on it at all only her bowl and the new perches I put in there. She rarely is in the corner. I've been having a time trying to get her cage ilwhere I need it to be because of the size but she's been out most of the day so far so I've given myself til this evening to get it done. We got our other grow lights to put up so that's happening as well because I thought it was not quite as light as I wanted but still bright. That should be helpful to all of them as well. They're full spectrum which is what I was told they needed so should give them plenty of good uv that they need. So far so good with her and she seems very happy to be here. I am hoping she doesn't change after her honeymoon period unless it's for the better, voodoo was the only one who did anyway negative but it was just slightly because I found out he HATED his cage that I didn't like either now he's the same temperamental butt that he's always been but we go back in the cage easier (still not a fan of it but he doesn't want to eat me if I make him go back) the others I've ever had usually changed to being nicer and more comfortable but I'm still prepared for the devil to emerge being she's not got a lot of info or interactions but if we can keep her knowing I'm the way in and out and I give the good stuff them I think we'll be just fine. If not we're back tracking to retrain her. She doesn't really like the act of stepping up and I think it puts her off balance (seems she's just out of practice and perhaps she doesn't have a lot of muscle tone) but once she's up she wants to come up on my arm at least to my forearm I think she feels more stable there. She was preening my hair this morning for a minute but I got scared she was going to rip one out because my hair has locs and she had feet and all so I made her stop. She really likes to lean her beak on me. My face, my chest, my arm whatever is close to her it seems like she feels safer when she's touching me. She was flinching when I would put my other hand to head pet so I started the "pet your head" and she learned really quickly that I'm going to touch her and she stopped doing it and typically gives a slight head feather fluff and eye close when I say it like she knows. She's quite the bird so far and I couldn't be happier that we'll get to spend our whole lives together! The others will unfortunately be long gone before I am (as long as nothing happens to early to me ) but we'll never be alone. I am hoping that she doesn't outlive me to far so she doesn't have a chance to go somewhere that might not be good to her.

Elvira is in her big ugly cage definitely getting a new one but it'll do just fine for now! Have to find the cloth pad for the bottom and I removed the grate because I found out I don't need it haha. Here she is in her new home! I have a couple local made toys we found at an exotic bird fair yesterday and she went in a backpack to the bbq which she loved. Thanks to Amazon we got it quickly enough and she really enjoyed it! 20230930_163313.jpg 20231001_145355.jpg

What a lucky bird.
I had similar results when Lucy had her egg resorbing problem and nearly died.
I am wondering if maybe her leg nerves could have gotten damaged by distention when she was with egg?
An old cage won’t hurt her. The important thing was to get her off that sand perch. Are her soles ok or does she have hot spots from that sand perch?

Her soles look very good which the vet was surprised. I believe that's y she was clinging to the side of the cage so her feet didn't hurt. She's a little unstable but seems she's getting there but she doesn't like to step up because she gets wobbly at first. She's always standing on her bowls which makes her poop in them so I'm thinking about putting her other 2 in at weird places with the things she wants to make her move around more and put the things that I want her to eat in that bowl. She's doing really well considering everything she's been through

Would it be ok to have 2 cages for her in different rooms? Her cage is definitely not something I can easily move rooms with but she's not scared of the dogs and i want her to be able to be in the living room (caged) when I am in there and be able to go to sleep in my room at night (cats are free roaming the house at night and not allowed in my room ever). I assume it'll be fine but not ever really done it with any bird before so thought I'd ask. Her test results should be back tomorrow by the way and hopefully we'll have a clean bill of health. I'm to scared to let her stay in the living room at night because she can't defend herself if asleep and I don't want her not sleeping because of the cat. That and her out and about time will be in my room mostly so she's completely safe

Well vet finally called today her results were great no signs of anything she said there's a fungal test that's still pending so waiting on that but she said we're all good to go really. In 3 months we'll go back to get her blood work again and see if her cholesterol is down and liver function is back to normal. She's not had but 1 walnut since she's been here and I rarely give seeds maybe a tiny bit of pure fun at bedtime so it should be normal.

We go on outings now and she loves them and people love her. She's a very well behaved girl so far! She does NOT like my red chiefs hoodie!! That was freaking her out I don't know why exactly maybe because of the color but that's not happening anymore. She coos at me quite often now and I absolutely melt. It's the most relaxing thing... She makes several random noises I'm not sure which are ones that are natural and which are learned. She made the kissy noise really well the other day! I'm overjoyed with being able to have her as a companion forever!!

I'm looking into a cage we can put in another room for her to have a different place if I ever have company.... Was contemplating that since I don't need her making any of those sounds thanks so much for the support y'all!

She's a bit steadier I believe but she still loses balance when she's trying to really move around but never falls. I am thinking about taking her food from the top bowl and making them both water and moving the other 2 to other parts of the cage so she has to move up and down to eat and get those leggies moving more.

How do I keep birds from picking at tattoos!!? Never had a problem but I think she thinks it's something on me

I don’t know. I know there’s tattoo makeup to cover them but I wouldn’t want to do that every time I hoped my bird. I don’t know if she may eventually learn that the tattoo won’t come off? Maybe you can reward her for not picking at it, or is there an arm or shoulder with no tattoo that you can wear her on?

I’m happy to hear the good news and also that she is so sweet. I wonder if being confined in a tiny cage would weaken her legs this much. ??

I've got tattoos on both sides in the same spots unfortunately so not really an option. I'll try rewarding her for not picking it. She stops when I tell her but I think she really wants it off.

I wonder myself if she'd been in that tiny cage a LOT longer than they're claiming... Or probably one just like the others they had were in. The only one in a proper cage was the Amazon and it was a little smaller than I would keep her in but we'll never know. It would make sense that she's not used to moving around and hangs out in one spot. Idk people ain't right.

She's got a few issues I've noticed in the 8 days I've had her but so far nothing to crazy. She has major touch issues she thinks she's going to get hit I assume so I have to tell her things like pet your head so she'll puff her head and lean it down and she doesn't get frightened. She's freaked out by the baby parakeet in the cage that learned to fly it keeps doing it wanting attention and she doesn't know what to think. I'm shuffling everyone around tomorrow and maybe that'll help her if I move voodoo closer because he talks and interacts the most so she might feel better and calmer. He's been a great boy since she's been here mostly. I think he knows she's had a rough time and needs some love. I wonder if they can communicate even though they're different types of birds? It's like they know.....

I'll try to get a video of her losing balance on her bowl but it happens super fast and sporadically. If she did have a yolk stroke as Dr said it she might actually still be recovering so more climbing the better I would say. Vet told me go ahead with the big cage cause her grip is great. I almost wonder if she might have vision issues but idk how I would begin to tell.....

I wouldn't necessarily keep her from having walnuts. They are an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids. (Sunflower seeds are high in Omega -6 fatty acids, not so good)
They are very good for her to have in moderation.
also FYI, Almonds are nut that is a good source of calcium especially if she doesn't get it from other foods like dark green leafy veg and broccoli. She can have those in moderation also.

Can I order the almonds on Amazon that are safe? She's not exactly the best with the greens she'll pick out everything else and might eat 1. I have to get veggies again and idk y I didn't get any broccoli last time as I always do but hopefully she'll go for those.

She LOVES hard boiled eggs but how much is a safe amount? I usually let her have about a quarter or less of it at a time because I get scared of her getting to much of things. She can eat all the veggies she'll consume as far as the vet said but I forgot to ask about the egg when she called. I'll start giving her a piece of the walnut a day if it's safe. She was getting that seed mix stuff with sunflower seeds which she might get a tiny bit of maybe til whatever is left is gone. It's just some cheap Walmart stuff that's for cockatiels I think.

Any idea how to get her to play with toys? She's got plenty of them but she never touches them.

She must have been abused or something because she shakes like I'm going to be mean to her then I tell her pet your head and then she comes and calms down. She's doing well but the little things just break my heart. She's so sweet but she's definitely got her boundaries and she will let me know with a firm beak but never hurt that she doesn't want to do something. She'll move my hand away from her if I want her to step up and she doesn't want to which seems fine but I just don't want her to think she can do it all the time. She's only allowed to get out when she steps up though so I don't think we will have a terrible go at it

You want almonds that are unsalted. You can buy those many places. Pretty soon the new crop of almonds in the shell will start appearing at the grocery. Again you want unsalted. It is great for her to have to work a bit for her food - foraging! If the hard shells of the grocery store ones are a bit too hard for her you can start them with a nutcracker or buy her softshell ones. They are called "nonpariel" variety, in-shell, and they are even easy for you to crack with your fingers. The in-shell nonpariels can be hard to find.
My BFAs both were crazy for the thick stems of red beet leaves, give the whole stem in one piece but only once a week tops because they are high in oxalates. Try a 2-inch piece of celery, and some snap peas in the pod. Try carrots raw -cut into sticks and rounds, and cooked carrots. Amazons seem to often have vitamin A deficiencies which you can safely help by giving the precursor beta-carotene found in carrots, broccoli, red peppers. One of my Amazons likes red bell pepper pieces, the other of course must have whole minipeppers.

Vets now prefer parrots to get non-animal protein. But personally mine love scrambled eggs every few weeks, and I give a piece about quarter-sized. They do like unsalted beans I cook for them from dried and freeze into portions. Garbanzo/chickpeas, pinto, and white navy beans are the favorites here.

Any idea how to get her to play with toys? She's got plenty of them but she never touches them.

One of my Amazons really likes to rip up pine /wood pieces and the other likes shredders like seagrass mats and mahogany pods. You need to try an assortment of textures and see what they like. You can start with balsa which she will find easy to demolish and progress from there. Mahogany pods are very easy also and an interesting shape.

She must have been abused or something because she shakes like I'm going to be mean to her then I tell her pet your head and then she comes and calms down. She has been with you such a short time and so much is new to her. Really, just slow down and take things at her pace. My male BFA was never abused but he had a real hard patch when his mom got Alzheimers. Initially he didn't even know what a perch was and couldn't fly. It took 9 months till I could touch him. He blossomed at his own pace.

I was so confused by it at first I figured it out!

Anyway I'll get her some almonds and try the different things u said. I do have full spectrum lights up in the room which is supposed to help with the vitamin deficiencies in birds but definitely not as good as consuming. They're at the very top of the ceiling to not hurt their eyes. I'm time changing them so we get more time together since I work and they're on my bedtime schedule at 12 hr intervals.

I figured letting her set the boundaries right now was fine since she's new I just want her to know she's not getting locked up for 6 years again and that I like touching her so she's not got to turn around when I open the cage . The shaking is when I walk in and it's sometimes. I always say the same thing when I walk in in the same way but I'm fairly sure it's got to do with what I'm wearing she likes my work clothes but I don't let her on them if they're ones I wore because toooo many things on there that could kill her.

I vary her times out as I've learned to not get them into a routine because if something is happening and she can't be out then I can't have anyone getting mad. Voodoo gets angry enough for everyone

She's doing so great for her former situation so we're keeping her in the right direction as long as she wants to come out we'll be fine I just don't ever want her scared and I think she idk doesn't know what to think of the others.

How would I tell if she has a vision issue? Sometimes it seems like she doesn't see well and it's not all the time though. I have 2 vision impaired dogs and it really seems like she has something but testing them I don't believe would work the same for her... I'd be afraid it would make her think I was being aggressive or a threat. I'm going to mention it when we go back for her checkup in 3 months to the vet but thought there might be a way to tell myself as that's really what my dog vet told me to do with them but they're double Merle (rescues not something I did) and they had obvious eye deformities so he advised save the money for toys and treats rather than waste it on something that is relatively useless being we already knew. Just wondering.
