Hello, I am new here. I am trying to sex my 5 month old tiel. I have tried to understand the genetic side, but unfortunately after 5 months I still cannot get my head around it.
So can anyone who understands genetics and mutations help please.
My baby is split to pied with a clear colour at the back of the head. Mum is pearl and dad is heavy pied. I would love someone to reply that really understands the genetics of sexing. Therefore I am not going to put photos on at this point. Is there a genetic expert out there please.

So mother is a pearl, dad is pied. Baby is split pied.

Is the baby a normal grey? whiteface? pearl? Sorry, without pictures, I can't say what the chick is.... other than lacking more information, the chick could be male or female. If male, then also split pearl.

Even with more information, you may not be able to visually sex your chick until he or she goes through their first molt.

If the father was pearl or split pearl, or cinnamon or lutino, but the mother was not that mutation, then any visual offspring would automatically be females

To get a visual male, the mother would need to be a visual of one of those mutations and the father visual or split.

I think my tiel is a girl. But according to your reply should be a boy.

Is your cockatiel a cinnamon? Or normal grey?

Based on the information you have given, there isn't enough to say if your bird is male or female. Even with more information, we may not be able to determine gender based on genetics.

I was giving a reference saying that if the parents mutations were flipped (or another sex-linked mutation was in play), we could more easily figure out if the chick in question was male or female.... but you stated that the mother is a pearl.

I am not sure if you got the photos of my tiel . I have tried to attach them but not sure if they have been posted. Mother us definitely pearl. Dad looked like a lutino but had all dark pied wings.

Very cute little chick! And yes, as I thought, you wont know for sure on sex until the little one goes through a molt unless this little one displays any obvious male or female behaviors.
