Hello, my budgie/parakeet Frost needs help. He has blood feathers and this is my first time dealing with this. I’m pretty sure he got attacked by my other budgie/parakeet Kiwi. I gave him a shower and found maybe 2 blood feathers but I got so scared I would hurt him so I left him. He’s trying to sleep rn but I can tell it’s hurting him as he’s moving his wing up. Please help me. I’m not experienced at all and idk if I can get to a vet. Thanks

I can not tell exactly what is going on there under that wing but the skin actually looks terribly bruised to me. I do not see any blood feathers nor blood.

What actually happened that has you concerned?

I can’t quite tell from my screen in the pics if there is some damage to the flesh there. Does there appear to be any scrapes/tears beyond the feathers? It appears more like damage to the flesh to me than blood feathers.

Definitely keep them in separate cages at this time in case it was a fight. Make sure this little one has plenty of fresh water and food on offer at all times. Keep his stress low. My budgies appreciate having the top and 3 sides of their cage covered with a blanket, that may help keep him feeling a bit safer.

I would definitely recommend getting him to an avian vet if only because it’s so hard to tell what damage may have been done.

Thinking off what Shezbug said, is there anything in the cage (or outside it if he was out) that he could have potentially been caught between that could have bruised him like that? Any heavy toys close to the cage sides or anything that comes to mind?

I’m also wondering if he’s maybe caught that wing through the bars- my Squeak has done that before and made a bit of a mess of himself.

I agree it doesn't look like a typical blood feather problem. I had a moluccan cockatoo that I had to pull a blood feather occasionally and this looks different. I would keep a very close eye on him. I would also look up what emergency vets that will take in birds are in area and make plan if just in you need to take him in. It's better to figure out what resources are available before you need them. It's not the kind of thing you want to do in panic.

Best of luck with him. I hope he feels better soon

I’m not gonna lie. I genuinely don’t know. However yesterday when she attacked him is when I felt like he was definitely hurt. When I checked I found that out. Maybe he was caught in something. I’m not sure. But what do I do? I added an ointment which has helped him a lot. Hopefully in the next couple of days it helps slowly. And yes I am going to closely monitor him as much as possible. Thank you all for the messages and the urgency
