Fresh Aloe?

I was at this market today that sells all types of really unique produce and such. They had HUGE fresh aloe leaves for something like $1.00.

Somehow I recall that giving birds the actual aloe leaf was a good thing. Erring on the side of caution, I put it back and figured I would post here to find out the answer.

I have also heard that but have no idea if it is true. I seem to remember seeing a picture someone posted of skewers that had slices of aloe on them. I haven't been able to find that thread since. I would also really like to know.
