Hey guys! I haven't posted here in a while unfortunately, I've been super busy. But I have been reading up on posts now and then!

Thought I'd post an update on Frankie.

We took him to his new avian specialist vet a week or so ago for a health check and nail trim and I was beyond happy to hear the vet approve of everything we were doing for him. I have you all to thank for that!! You've all given fantastic advice and been super patient with me so thank you!

Then, it was like he got jinxed and he flew into a door yesterday, injuring his eye. My heart broke and I took him to the vet immediately, they were amazing and managed to squeeze us in.

The vet couldn't see his actual eyeball too well due to the swelling of his eyelids but mentioned what she could see seemed fine. She assumed it was an eyelid trauma and prescribed some eye ointment and pain relief medicine. She said once the swelling has gone down if it looks like his actual eyeball is injured then we should bring him back.

His eyelid swelling has gone down but his eyeball looks odd to me still. Do you guys think I should wait the six days they said to do his treatment before taking him in? I feel so horrible and upset.

Now that we look at it, it seems he has an injury just above his eye, and I think that is what swelled up, but I don't know if it also damaged his eye. If anyone has ever experienced nursing a bird with an injured eye please reach out to share any advice. Will it stop looking so gorey soon? Is it going to get worse before it gets better? How can I tell if he's lost his vision in that eye?

Again, thank you all so much for all your help up until now:hug8::heart:

P.S: sorry for the title stuff up it was meant to say accident and update

I am so sorry for poor Frankie! :sadhug2:

Considering that you are working with an avian vet, I am confident you should take their advice. You can call if you are really worried and describe what you see over the phone. 6 days to allow the inflammation to resolve will help the vet find any other problems. Don't panic and trust your vet :)

My partner is a medical doctor for humans, he has had some really insane eye injuries come in. He tells me he is always amazed at how resilient eyes are. -hopefully this helps comfort you.

Thank you for being an awesome parrot to Frankie. What a lucky little guy :xflove:

Thank you so much!! That does make me feel better and more relieved.

His eye isn't swollen anymore, we can see his eyeball but it's - I don't really know how to describe it. It looks like there's a layer of red over it. Like congealed blood. It looks like a person with a really red, bloodshot eye but his eyes are already black so it just looks super dark red all around.

I have an image but his eye is closed in it. He had it open in the morning but he kept it shut after the ointment was put on.

Sorry about Frankie's injury. Do let the vet know what is going on regarding the way the eyeball looks.
Hope eye area/eye will be better soon.

I agree you should let the vet know the progress. Bleeding in the eye or changes in the appearance are important to report.

My little chicken named Petra fell on a thorn when he was a chick. He was just working on flapping; he jumped and miscalculated his landing. It stabbed his eye. He ended up fully recovering, but I had to tape his toe so he wouldn't scratch at it. Parrots are different with taping and scratching. My point is to have hope! Accident can happen. Going to an avian vet was an awesome first step :)

The vet prescribed a topical ointment for Petra. It did make his eye look weird and filmy though he recovered without secondary infection. Since he was a little roo, he ended up going a breeding program. He grew into a beautiful guy.

(circa: 2015) You can see his tiny taped toe here. --he was normally on straw/hay. The polished wood floor is dangerous for chicks to regularly live on. --it was play time.

We are big into wing hugs. He is the plymouth rock bottom right of the picture. He was so sweet. I miss him, but he has a family and plenty of his own babies.

Thank you so much! I'm so glad to hear your little guy made a full recovery, he's so beautiful!! I love chickens and roosters so much, I really want to get some soon.

I'll try to call the vet once I'm home to update them on the eye and ask about taping, because he has been scratching at the area around his eye.

Now I'm even more thankful he just got his nails clipped :angel1: they were so sharp before. The nurse mentioned they weren't overgrown but that Asiatic birds tended to have very sharp talons!

Sorry to hear about his accident. As suggested, I too would call the vet's office and give them an update on his condition to see what they suggest.

If there is vision loss he will be blinking a lot trying to focus.
Thanks so much for this! He isn't doing that thankfully, but his eye is shut most of the time. I'm thinking / hoping it's the equivalent of a black eye for humans? That it's bruised and shut now but it'll get better within a week or two hopefully.

Probably. Keep a close eye on it though.

How is Frankie feeling?

Hey guys! Thanks for all your kind wishes and words.

Frankie is feeling much better and is acting the same as he did before the accident. Despite that, it does seem like he's lost his vision unfortunately.

He keeps his eye shut quite a lot, but when it is open it doesn't look the same as his other one. The white of his eye is yellow and not a perfect ring around his eye. Other than that it looks normal but like I said, it doesn't look like he can see out of it, and if he can, it's probably not very clear.

I'm hoping to take him to the vet sometime soon, but due to the fact that he's acting perfectly healthy right now I'm not exactly in a rush and would like to save money for any potential procedures first.

He can still fly perfectly too, and doesn't have any problems like bumping into anything or missing his targets either.

What do you guys think?
