I lost the white-backed Daddy bird several days ago, but managed save the eggs by putting them into an incubator. I painfully learned after several tries that you can not handfeed a mousebird baby from day one. But in doing so I also learned WHY this is not possible.

There is very little information on mousebirds and nothing really on fostering eggs. And from past experiences I learned I can swap and foster babies. BUT, this is with the same species babies. This time out of desperation I fostered a White-backed (WB) egg to a blue-naped (BN) nest that had a 3-4 day old chick. The egg hatched yesterday afternoon and they did not eat it or tossed it. I was very apprehesive because difference species of mousebird babies have different sounds and visual looks to the parents. And egg colors are different. I checked this morning (3rd pix) and the baby was still there and looking good :)

Thanks!...I hope all goes well too :) You can see the difference bewteen the species beaks, and also the difference in egg colors. WB are plain, un-patterned, and BN have patterns (spots). Under normal circumstances I had researched that they would notice and not accept this...so I am glad things are going smoothly so far...

So far, so good :) All the eggs are under the pair with the chicks now. Here is Pinks with the 2 chicks peeking out waiting for the incoming Daddy to feed them....

I am definitely going to follow this adventure. Good luck. Glad the weather has warmed up. It's raining tonight so the added moisture in the air might be good for the little ones. What do you think?

Yes...it is raining here too. I just checked on all the mousers, and the wet weather somehow has them emptying their pellet bowls, so I had to refill all the bowls. The foster parents are sitting tight on the nest.

Great news! I am very intrigued by these interesting little birds and wish you well in the fostering process.

Susanne, I was wondering how things are going with the orphan babies?

Sadly the fostered babies disappeared :( That was the incentive for me though to change all the birds around, since I'm suspecting in a colony situation that all the extra singles wound up being the ones that either ate or killed any chick past one in a nest.
