Foot wound - self mutilation or dry skin?

No other symptoms. I graphed when he'd mutilate, and it was generally when his hormones were high.

SSD was prescribed by the vet. No collar needed. Usually once I padded surfaces (making sure everything was non abrasive) and started seeing the wounds heal up from applying SSD 2x a day for a few days, I'd reduce it a bit. Id let him heal up on his own once I could tell he was moving around and not further mutilating.

The sooner I caught the earliest signs and was proactive, the quicker he got back to being his usual self.
Without a collar, is it a problem if they lick the SSD cream?

We went to the vet this morning.

GREAT NEWS: We have a (non-board certified) avian vet within forty-five minutes of our house. She has been seeing parrots for 10 years, has an african grey, and has at least one parrot patient per day. That is an HUGE improvement over our previous experience calling around. The only way I found them was by looking at google reviews for every vet office within an hour of my house. For whatever reason, they don't promote this vet's expertise on their website, even though she has tons of experience.

GOOD NEWS: We did a culture and have identified the problem as a yeast infection. She'll be taking oral meds for 10 days. Also, the knockoff SSD cream I found on Amazon was approved of by the vet, and we were told to keep using it.

NOT-SO-GOOD NEWS: We have to give oral meds and Cord does not love it. I wish I'd been training that as part of our husbandry tasks. After we're done with the meds and she has forgiven me, I'm going to look into adding this to our repertoire.

I got my B&G Macaw to take meds via syringe by offering a treat first, then the meds & a treat after. Actually my Macaws favorite was chamomile ice tea. I told her IF she took her meds she could have tea. She loved sinking her beak into it & slurping it up. So I'd let her take a drink, give the med & then more tea.

Hahaha, this is awesome! I wish I had a slam-dunk treat like this. Maybe I'll see what she'll do for a walnut. Although, that requires releasing her feet to eat.

Giggie does this right before nesting and eggs. I’ve found a hormone shot will stop it. We go through it every year and sometimes a few times. She will start on her toes and sometimes gravitate to under her wings.

Does she go all the way to ripping the skin off her feet until they have open spots that bleed?

Yes usually if I see it start, I up her gabapentin and she gets a hormone shot. If I don’t and it gets worse, she picks all the way up her legs and under her wings.
