fluffy feathers

Hello!

Not sure if Im in the correct place to post this but,

what are this fluff feathers for? (they grey ones)
I feel my macaw got more of these ones and saw some more growing out.
he is 9 months old.
Im just wondering if its normal he gets more of them and what are their function?

Those are the down feathers that all birds have! Their purpose is insulation. Most of the feathers a bird has are these, and usually you can only see them in areas like under the wings, or if you push past the colorful covert feathers. Sometimes when they are molting and haven't fixed them yet you will also see them :)
