I'm pleased to announce February's "Mayor of the Avenue"
This award is presented to a member who exhibits the qualities that distinguish them to be an upstanding credit to the Avenue, a loving, informed, conscientious and caring bird parront and an all around good neighbor.
Please join me in welcoming this month's Mayor - Crystal!!!
1. What kind of birds do you have (age, species and names)?
Merlin (African Grey - almost 13)
Stryder (White Faced Cockatiel - 9)
Rosco (Black Headed Caique - 5)
2. What got you interested in birds?
I started working at a large pet store, met one of my co-workers flock (greys, amazons, tiels, finches) & she happened to have a clutch of baby cockatiels in need of good homes. It was a whirlwind of education and so many different avian experiences from that day forth.
3. What have your birds brought to your life?
They have enriched my life in so many different ways, and more importantly - Non-stop party sounds.
4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?
Respect, the willingness to try new things (even when I'm afraid), and that life is fun (see above)
5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?
Merlin saying, "I love you"
6. Where is your birds main living area?
They have one of the bedrooms on the top level of the floor.
7. Did you change things in your home to accommodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?
Yes - we bought a 3-bedroom, ensuring one of the rooms was large enough to house the birds' cages & play area, we made a playstand to accommodate 1-2 of our flock in the living room, and we ensure the Wingdow was centre stage on the main level as well.
8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?
Ottawa Parrot Club
9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?
A grapevine stand - they're so gorgeous!
10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?
Military Macaw. I had such a great experience raising a clutch from 3 weeks of age onwards - Reagan was the one who won my heart.
11. Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds.
I wake up early so I can shower with one of the birds (they rotate days and people!), then it's time to change the waters/papers, give a quick scrub to the frontal poops (poop at the front of the cages/doors), fresh food & yummy treat mixes, and head off to work.
When we get home from work, I contact call Merlin (it's our special thing), and Husband usually spends some time reading in the bird room, ducking from Rosco's bomb dives & I make dinner with one of the boys. We dine with 1-2 of the birds (yay!), and might snuggle while watching a show for a bit until I have to go down to my workshop to start on orders. Husband takes over the care until I go up to give the fids snuggles at 9 pm, because as of 9pm, Merlin starts telling us, "Go night night" repetitively until we put them to bed.
12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?
Patience, patience, patience.
13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?
Not sure - for our own fids, it has only gotten better with time - like a fine wine!
14. What other hobbies do you have?
Am I supposed to have time for hobbies? I used to scrapbook...but it's been well over a year since I've had time to do that. We do ski on weeknights & snowshoe on the weekends during the winter, and will start biking & rollerblading again once summer comes around. I also read a lot during my lunch breaks at work & before bed.
15. Anything else you would like to share?
I was rather speechless when I was advised I was nominated - thanks to all of YOU for having the best Avian forum out there
