F10/Bleach Alternative for Cage Disinfectant?

Hi everyone,

I've tried searching through old threads but couldn't find any answers. Is there an alternative to F10 or bleach to disinfect cages?

I can't get F10 in time for my new cage and would like to avoid bleach because of the fumes and I don't trust myself with it.

I was initially going to go with diluted vinegar or bicarb and lemon juice but I read that those are only suitable as cleaners?

Steam is hot enough to kill bacteria and to help you clean off any yucky things...... cleaning with steam is wonderful if you have concerns with chemicals.

Yup i do! But it's not that powerful... I guess it'd still do the job? I plan to wash with hot water, scrub and wipe down with cleaning solution (either vinegar or bicarb) then rinse that off before disinfecting.

Will try to get my hands on F10 for future cleanings..

If you can rinse the cage really well to remove any residue after washing it then essentially you could use any sort of disinfectant (I have about four different sorts in my home lol) you may have at home. Just ensure your bird is not smelling the fumes etc and rinse four times more than you think you may need to ;)

What is the general opinion regarding chlorohexadine?

I see it recommended a lot with reptiles, but I don't know if it is considered suitable for birds.

Haven't use it myself because I stocked up on f10 like a mad man, but Disinfectants has this to say about it.

Relatively non-toxic to skin and non-corrosive. Good activity against many bacteria, yeast, and some enveloped viruses. Has limited activity against some bacteria (particularly Pseudomonas), spores produced by mycobacteria and non-enveloped viruses. Ineffective in the presence of organic debris and has limited stability. Must be made fresh at least once per day. May have potential carcinogenic effects.

I've only got Dettol for disinfectant at home. I'll try steaming it after using a bicarb and lemon juice solution.

Strangely can't find white vinegar in the supermarkets :/

I always wondered about dettol too but I have a feeling it is too strong for use around the birds.

We recently got a Karcher steamer for the office... I´m pondering purchasing one for my home to clean the cages because so many folks seem to like using steam cleaners...

6th question down. Maybe worth contacting Dettol to see what they say?

Steaming does the job and is quick and easy! I have had this one for many years. Steam cleaned a large walk-in aviary in 30 minutes yesterday.

This may be a little off topic but how often do you guys disinfect your cages?

I know it depends on the bird but I'm not sure if I should be disinfecting once a week or once a month.

Hi guys,
I ordered F10 Veterinary Disinfectant from a pet store and got this instead:

Is this one safe to use for cleaning? No idea why you don't get the same product as shown?! I saw the same thing on another online store...
