I am an absolute beginner birdwatcher. I'm in Europe on business and vacation with my husband and had high hopes of seeing some birds that I couldn't see in the US. Of course I wound up with the most common birds anywhere, a jackdaw, a Euro robin, and goslings. I also got a pretty crappy picture of a grey heron too.
Oh well, we had a great time, met some wonderful people and drank some good beer.

Like you I wasn't a bird watcher until I got involved with the wild parrots and joined the Audubon Society. Can recommend your local Audubon Society highly. Had the wrong impression of Audubon- great conversationists- entironmentalists, parrot lovers, teachers etc. Join and attend some functions. All kinds of great people. Also, there is a great site for finding wild parrots in Europe. City Parrots - Urban parrot conservation. Yes there are flocks of ring necks and amazons in France and Germany.
