Pictures Exciting day at Starved Rock!

Today I was able to see two birds I wanted to see in the wild before I die, bald eagles and pelicans! This was at Starved Rock State Park in Oglesby, Illinois! I was so excited about the bald eagle that I was practically shaking!

This was near Plum Island Eagle Sanctuary, which is in the middle of the Illinois River. And the pelicans were a bit further down, by the Illinois Waterway Visitor Center.

I also recorded a tiktok through the telescope, so you can see just how many pelicans there were by the lock!

That's a lot of pelicans! Now that I think of it I don't think I've ever seen a pelican in person

Why's it called Starved Rock?

"The park derives its name from a Native American legend. In the 1760s, Chief Pontiac of the Ottawa tribe, was attending a tribal council meeting. At this council of the Illinois and the Pottawatomie, an Illinois-Peoria brave stabbed Chief Pontiac. Vengeance arose in Pontiac’s followers. A great battle started. The Illinois, fearing death, took refuge on the great rock. I live just under two hours from this park, its a really cool place

I'm also just under 2 hours away! I'm towards the Indiana border.

I've gone to the park almost every year since I was a child and had never seen a bald eagle, it took me 20 years but I'm just so stoked I finally got to see one in person
