The grey mare is Blu (AQHA Reg name Twistin Blu Wrangler) and the Thoroughbred gelding is my Shadow (Jockey Club Reg name Bet on a Badger) I adore these two and love to just stand out there and talk to them, pet or groom them. Of course, riding is even better but this time of year it's too risky with all the deer hunters about.
We do not cover them - horses will not grow adequate winter coats if they are covered and they need their woolie coats along with a great big layer of fat to stay warm - we can get 45 degrees below and 65 below with windchill during the winter. They are not stalled either although they have walk in stalls in the stables, but they prefer to be outside 95% of the time. We feed them out starting September with free choice hay, grain/feed/supplements and loads of beet pulp to fatten them up this time of year.
