We are delighted in a bittersweet way to report that a properly-equipped foster finally opened up for Dusky through the nearby rescue, so we took him to her today! He was so good every step of the way. He needed to be toweled to get him into his travel cage, but he was very polite about it and only lightly nipped us in the process (not even enough to leave a bruise or draw blood). Then he munched on his food and chewed on his perch/toy and chirped curiously at us the whole ride there.

His new foster apparently specializes in hand-taming shy and anxious birds, and he's gonna be staying in a BIG OL' CAGE with so many toys and perches (both new and familiar)! And of course, we've made sure his new foster knows his favorite things in the world are bell peppers and destruction. We're gonna miss him so, so much, but we're so so happy for him and so proud of how far he's come in the 3.5 months we've known him. <3

Got an update from Dusky's new foster -- apparently he's being a very good boy and coming out of his cage and accepting treats already! We're so proud of him!! <3

The family member we got him from insisted "that bird is just a [jerk] that hates everyone and everything," and I've never been so happy to prove someone very, very wrong.

Got another Dusky update today! He's apparently really warming up to his foster family, and he had a more thorough vet check-up and is apparently "in great health"!! Which is such a relief to hear on all counts.

Got another Dusky update!! He's apparently now excited to come out of his cage and has started taking treats directly from his foster's hands! Also, his foster home has some other birds (a couple of green cheeks, I believe) who are helping Dusky relearn how to be a bird now that he's out of quarantine. <3

Been a while since we posted (this year has been a wild ride), but we're still getting monthly-ish Dusky updates from the rescue he's with, and he's doing AMAZING with his new foster family! He's apparently having the time of his little birdy life flying around, watching (and yelling) out windows, and sneaking into his buddies' cages to steal snacks and take baths in their water bowls, haha. He LOVES living with other birds, so they're going to try and find him a perma-home with other birds around his size. He's not hand tame yet, but he does love hanging out near humans and will take treats from their hands -- especially if the treat in question is dried papaya!

Turns out the bird we were warned is a jerk who hates everyone, human and avian alike, is actually quite a little social butterfly once he feels comfortable and safe! Funny how that works.

And the latest one -- look how much healthier his feathers are after a year of being cared for and a nice molt! When we rescued him, he was absolutely covered in stress bars and his feathers were just generally a bit more dull and shaggy than they should be, as you can see in the pictures above. But look at him now:
