My conure Butters beak and cere are getting very dry lately. Any ideas on what I can do to help him out a bit? (this happened around this time last year too)
Could the fact that it is winter and the heat is on and it is dry be causing it?
I'm sure our dry heating systems have a lot to do with it.
Try feeding her some red palm oil, or use canola oil in some food (you can add a drop to Nutriberries, cook her an egg in it, add a drop to spaghetti sauce).
Run the humidifier anyway. They really need the moisture for the respiratory system. You can bring the moisture level up by placing jars/pans of water on the heat registers (and evaporate the water) or simply boil some water in a kettle or on the stove. The best solution is to get a warm air humidifier and run it pretty close to where the birds hangout.
I use the pans on the stove method, open doors to the bathroom during showers, and I keep a small crock pot simmering with cinnamon sticks or cloves 24x7. It really helps with low humidty in our home.
Just keep the humidifier clean. Someone suggested adding 1cc of F10 as well to the water to help prevent any bacterial, mold or fungal growth between cleanings.
