It looks plucked. :(

Someone locally here is selling an 8 week old Rainbow Lorikeet and it's got all its feathers.

Here's a photo of it

I thought so. :(

Dende was about 8 weeks old when I rescued him and he looked like a perfect miniature of a fully grown Scaly-breasted Lorikeet. He had all his feathers.

I really want to get this baby. But I think buying him from these people will just encourage them to breed more plucked babies. :(

Wooow i would say so!!! How sad :( Ive never seen a baby bird that only grows feathers in certain places like that. When i bred tiels they always grew at the same time..wings maybe a little sooner..but not that much of a difference :(

That just confirms it. :(

I wonder why they waited so long to pull him for handfeeding. Probably just uneducated backyard breeders. :(

In Australia, I would suspect PBFD first off. It is so rampant in your wild bird population there.

I was also thinking PBFD or even other health issues.

It is quite rare that an 8 week old would pluck, unless it's just alot older than that. I mean even kept in the worst conditions an 8 week old parrot should not pluck.

There is the chance that a parrent or birdfriend plucked it, but then why is the head not plucked too?

So it's either sick, older than 8 weeks, or a different bird plucked it.

It's not PBFD. In lorikeets it manifests itself as no, or malformed flight and tail feathers. Rainbows with PBFD are called "Runners" because they can't fly. This is a parent plucked chick. The dead give away is it's wings. I've been breeding Rainbows for a decade now. Have seen chicks like this a few times.

Yes, it definitely is not PBFD. I work with an aviary full of PBFD lorikeets at the Sanctuary (ongoing research program). They all look very normal except they don't have tails or flight feathers. Some of them even grow their tail and flight feathers back in! (Only to lose them all again once they get stressed).

I really want to bring this baby home! :(
