Well like it says he flew over to the pot he always steals leftover hot cereal from tonight, BUT it had boiling water in it. He doesn't know steam equals hot and he touched down on it barely, made a little PIP sound and flew back to mama  Luckily he appears to be just fine and unscathed by almost burning his feet. He isn't holding either foot up, no burns, and everything is working fine. The last time Pippen managed to BARELY nip his foot he was whimpering and holding it up like she'd put a huge gash in it and all he had was a little pink spots where she pinched it.

Lurch learned about hot when he got mad that I didn't give him a bite of my hot cereal fast enough as I was blowing on it and saying hot. He dove into the spoon and pulled his face out screaming but luckily his tongue wasn't scalded. After that when I said hot he was very careful approaching whatever it was.

So remember our feathered friends don't know what hot is so be careful with hot pots and food around them so you both have a bad day :(

Quibble loves to be on me while I'm cooking and I'm always worried he's going to do something like this!

The title scared me. I'm so glad to learn Dobby is OK!
It is definitely something to watch out for.

I never ever ever cook or eat hot food like soup when my birds are out. Its an accident waiting to happen.
Usually cooking anything he can get into is done with by the time he gets out but she wanted some ramen and he's usually glued on her shoulder when she's up walking around.

Good idea but the main living area is open concept so curtains won't work :( We stopped letting birds free range after Lurch escaped and I think we all learned another lesson and have to adjust protocols again.

I don't think there is a way to protect them from everything, we just do our best.

I worry about this as my amazon immediately shows up in the kitchen when I cook, looking for handouts.

My plan so far is to work very consistently that she lands only on approved landing areas - three play stands and two cages. Anywhere else she is variously chased off, waved away, or picked up and thrown back into the air.

So far it's pretty much working. As she has gained better flight control if she wanders into an area without a stand, she circles a couple times then heads back out.

But when I sit down to eat if she hasn't gotten what she wanted (e.g. the other morning I gave her a bit of grits instead of eggs) she flies toward me and my plate. I'm still not sure where she would land, so far I've just waved her off. But I do foresee a messy landing.

One stand a move around quite a bit from living room to kitchen, I'm quite surprised how she is not thrown by that, she just checks one spot and goes to the other if not there.

But I'm getting more hopeful I can avoid the dangerous landings by rewarding only approved spots, and discouraging some others (e.g. waving arms and not letting her land, or sending her immediately back up un-fed).

Amazons are definetly heavier then conures, but I had some lukewarm eggplant stew that my evil seagul (cough, conure) flew into and got both me and him absolutely covered in. I now put Patchy in his cage when I eat. If the food is Patch safe, i'll cut him a tiny piece and put it in his cage so he doesnt run back and forth acting like I lock him in there all the time (He's free range)

I may resort to that. So far I'm having good luck if I give her a bit of food, even substitute. I had some chicken teriyaki a bit ago, which I think is too salty for her (probably for me as well, but I don't have a keeper). Instead I gave her the seed ball of a bell pepper. She won't eat bell pepper, but I've found she will eat the seeds off on (well, or she picks them out and slings them around the room, which is amazon for "eat").

But I do worry while cooking. I love food hot, and am always frying or boiling something when I eat. I should probably read up on "treating burned parrot feet".

Hopefully she has quick reflexes like Dobby above.
