Hello, fellow flock.
I had a funny idea; not sure, if it would work in any way.
I'd like to put rings on my ceiling to fly through.
My guess is they can fly at least through objects with a inner diameter of 30 centimeters /11.8 inches.

Any comments on if this could work? Any experience?
If not, they might still use it as a landing place. birdtoy 1.png

Sounds fun! I think I've seen people doing similar things b4, so I bet it would work if the rings are big enough.

Your drawing is adorable! Sounds fun!

Maybe some of those pool toss rings would work?

What kind of bird do you have? That will help with guessing wingspan and picking the right hoop size.

In my experience, birds will naturally use such hoops as landing points. If you want them to intentionally fly through them, that behavior will need to be trained.

Thanks for your interest, thanks for complementing my drawing :)
Pool rings sounds like an interesting idea; though I have some experience with paper maché and also gypsum among other materials.
Most probably I'll use gypsum and put a natural fiber on it, e.g. jute.

The only thing would be the "how tall".
Well, about my birds: they are parrotlets and every day since I got them they become better in their flight maneuvers. (at least in my view; might be wrong)

To be trained. hmm! I thought I could trick them by putting it into their most used flight routes.
Maybe if I start with really huge rings and get smaller and smaller? Probably necessary to test it. Who could answer that.
Or else I need to keep up my patience.

- Well, no harm in testing things out, if I am willing to spend my time.
One could call it "indirect training", if the rings become smaller over time.

I once found doggie rope toy "tug of war" rings that were much cheaper than bird rope rings. I got mine at the Dollar Store! @Zara weaves her own rope perches I think.

I have a few wooden rings in my parakeet aviary. The birds seem to like them as hang out spots. I've never noticed anyone flying through them, but they probably aren't big enough for that. Parakeets have 10 to 12 inch wingspans. Not sure about parrotlets.

Sounds very Interesting. Training them to fly through sounds like a nice idea, it might have to be as big as the wingspan.

Thank you for the reference rings. Ya... I guess you'd need
a) the hang of flying through, like someone pointed out
b) bigger rings - or you'd be an expert flyer

parrotlets have way smaller wings. 6 inches/ 15 cm. But you'd need a more bit space anyway. So... maybe 30cm or bigger would be a good start.
We'll test that. I guess I build something where the would need to fly through the ring to get the food. Might be a start.
After many fly-throughs, maybe they are ready to fly to me like that. Dunno.

I like your drawing. If you're ever up for making a signature, I'd love one.
Oh gosh, I am honoured. Erm, I can do that. But note:
a) I'd need a reference
b) I don't know how long it takes. Could be 1 day or a few days
c) do I have freedom? I saw some other artist here and he just painted something and the people seemed satisfied.
That being said, maybe you got an idea. I might try it out.
If you don't like the drawing, you can tell me, he he.
