We are back from the vet. He took one look at her feet and said that it's bumblefoot.
He said that it doesn't look infected yet (thinking about that now, that statement confuses me...I thought bumblefoot was an infection...maybe he meant the infection wasn't bad yet). He's not sure how she would have got it as all her perches, except for that one pedicure perch, are good--she has several different types of perches that all vary in diameter. I wonder if maybe she had it before we got her and it's just came back. The vet said that is a possibility.
We were told to put vitamin E oil on her feet everyday and bring her back in two weeks. The vitamin E oil should help get the scabs loose enough that he can scrape off the top layer so we can put topical antibiotics on her feet and have them actually get to the infection.
We also had routine bloodwork done and gram stains. Gram stains were fine, and we're waiting on the results from the bloodwork.
I had briefly considered bumblefoot as being the cause, but I had already been doing what was necessary to prevent it so I dismissed it. I'm off to do some more reading on bumblefoot now. I've read a lot about it in guinea pigs, but haven't read as much about it in birds. Has anybody ever dealt with it? Anybody have any suggestions or tips that would be useful, or some good info about it?
