I spotted this desert bird in Northern Virginia, the phainopepla.
(NOT MY IMAGE)
I'm pretty sure that I saw a female, brown colored bird with a crest, and two other black colored birds with the same crest, and a shiny beak. I did this in a canyon-like environment, where a forest was cut down long ago, and is now a desert area with lizards, few desert amphibians, and even bobwhites!
Is this a mistake? Phainopepla are found in deserts near Texas and California!
Did I see stray birds from the Sonoran desert or did I see some other bird? If it was some other bird, please help me out on its identification.
BACKGROUND:
They were perched atop tall grasses, and they made iceterid-like constant vocal chirps.
At first I thought that they were purple martins, but when they flew their wings were broad and short, like a sparrow's. Their tails were long, and they had really shiny black beaks. There was a contrast of color near the eye, (Like a yellow or something), and the female was mottled brown/grey, to regular brown/grey.
Please help with identification.
