My dusky Pi has been very subdued since he settled-in to our home. We're his fourth (in 10 years) so the poor guy has been moved around a lot 
He lived with his breeder, then a student (male), and finally a retiree before us. I notice he was much more verbal (he says a handful of phrases/words and a couple of distinct whistles) when we first brought him home, however, he's very quiet now unless demanding attention from us with his smoke alarm "beep".
We have him, along with our other two birds, in the front living room so they can hear the goings-on in the house and family members will go visit them during the day - but a) we don't have space for all their cages where we spend the majority of our time and b) find the separate room keeps them away from possible dangers (scents, the kitchen, etc.) and gives them a solid night's sleep as we can close the door at night.
I noticed just recently that his reaction to me changes drastically whether I wear my glasses or not. Glasses? Subdued. No glasses? He comes alive, with whistles and his characteristic phrases. I'm not sure what to make of this; do I look like a former owner there to be reunited with him ... or what? Is he depressed?!
Aside from being fascinated by this change in his behaviour, it makes me a little sad to think he's (perhaps) just waiting for his favourite person to "come back". We've had him about a year and have done everything possible to make him happy: a big cage with a variety of perches, fresh foods, pellet options, daily foraging opportunities, and time out of his cage (often in the walk-in aviary we built him in the backyard, when the weather is nice).
Would love insight, if anyone thinks they have any!
