Hi, new to group and hope I picked the right thread.
I have rescued a young cockatoo from some dogs. No obvious injuries, very quiet as if he has had human contact previously but unable to find any owners. I have birds so have been feeding watering and testing ability to fly every day with no luck.
Question - his bottom beak is splayed out on either side so it does not align with top beak. Has anyone seen this? In all the birds I have rehabilitated and owned in have never seen this shape before.
Any treatment you are aware of?
He can drink well but is very slow at eating and eating minimally. Stress or due to beak?!

Often need antibiotics after contsct with dogs even if no wounds seen .

Need beak pictures

Xtra warmth is always beneficial.

Try baby burd formula but make thick like thick yogurt. Serve from fingers, or on a small plate, or try feeding spoon, or sringe just st beak tip and give just a mouthful at time.

If no baby burd formula. Cooked mashed sweet potatoes, add ground pellets mixed with enough warm water to make a Paste, you can even add a dab of peanut butter to the mix ( but no artificial sweetners, use smooth)

Offering cooked mashed sweet potatoes great either way. Often well liked.

I would keep that rescued bird well away from any you may have.
I would also strongly suggest a vet look at him. I do not mean to be nasty but he is the oddest cocky I think I have seen, the poor little sausage.

He does not look good to me- hopefully it is a birth defect as opposed to a disease. The whole beak is weird looking to me.

Any chance of a few more pics of the head and also the whole bird from different angles?

No offense taken, been thinking the same thing about his poor beak… seems to have a much shorter lot of tail feathers too???
I have a lovely vet. Will touch base with him too

My guess is he probably has PBFD as many of the wild population of 2's here do.
His whole mouth looks extremely odd, his tail feathers are def not right and his crest is very thin as far as I am concerned.

Can you get him into a vet clinic who sees birds? Preferably an avian vet.

Some pics of the scruffiest companion SC2 I’ve personally seen for you to easily see the differences between facial features and crest in particular.

He wasn’t as cooperative as I’d hoped so I couldn’t get a perfect front on pic for you to see the shape of the top of the beak and nares.

If your bird does have PBFD this article should help PBFD. Just in case it's anything contagious I would recommend washing your hands in between interactions, keeping him as far away as possible from other birds, and not switching the bird's toys or bowls around. (We can not diagnose anything so it could be something genetic but just be very careful and follow my tips)

This can also be a regrowth from a damaged, torn off lower beak. Like is growing back. Something looks to me like might have had past jaw fracture to me.

Nothing is screaming PBFD symptoms to me. How do under feathers down feathers ers look? He could still be postive But I would treat all wild ones as if they are positive anyway..

Feathers around nares can indicate respiratory infection..maybe mites or lice

Thank you all for your input and quick replies. Much appreciated
Vet concerned for BPFD also and is now in the clinic. If positive the outcome for him is over the rainbow bridge.
If it is an injury/deformity he will return home with me to live out his days peacefully as a flightless bird.
Again many thanks.

Fingers crossed it is just a deformity. Will you please let us know what the outcome is?
