Our "Mayor of the Avenue" award is presented to a member who exhibits the qualities that distinguish them to be an upstanding credit to the Avenue, a loving, informed, conscientious and caring bird parront and an all around good neighbor.
I am happy to announce that Danita is December's Mayor of the Month.
I enjoyed reading your interview, and am sure that everyone else will as well!
1. What kind of birds do you have (age, species and names)?
Currently I have 6 birds! Two cockatoos (Coco and ROO), two greys (Cyd and Newman), a cockatiel (Duncan), and a macaw (Kiwi)
All are teens to in the 30 year age range.
2. What got you interested in birds?
There was a little cockatiel in a healthcare facility named Jamie, I was fascinated with him! I was so mesmerized that I ignored everything around me.
3. What have your birds brought to your life?
My birds have brought me a purpose to my life. I love to share online what it is like to live with birds and how to care for them. I enjoy being able to cater to customers who are purchasing high end bird products. Watching their crazy antics entertains me to no end. Plus, there is nothing more fulfilling then watching the rescues flourish in our family, seeing their personalities evolve from shut down and emotionless, to personality plus, characters.
4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?
Exposing our birdlife online, (@luckyloucocotoo) I have learned that there are so many personalities in this world, both animals and people. Each one is unique.
5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?
Meeting my first bird Jamie and the day that my Coco Cockatoo went viral. Both instances led me down a path I never in a million years that I would find myself.
6. Where is your birds main living area?
Everywhere. They do have a bird room, but a couple are in the living area. Mostly they all hang out with me in the kitchen.
7. Did you change things in your home to accommodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?
Of course, just the normal items that are toxic and unsafe for birds.
8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?
Yes, I have a social media page, and some communities within that.
9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?
A greenhouse/room that the birds can enjoy outside safely.
10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?
A pink bird!
11. Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds.
Every minute of the day is bird. Wake up at 4:30 am make bird videos, start on my bird business by 7:30 am, unleash the beasts at 9 am, 11 am they go in for quiet time then I work on the bird businesses until 3pm. At 3, I unleash the beasts and clean and working on videos. By 9 pm I am in bed.
12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?
You will always make mistakes in caring for birds. Learn from them and promise yourself to do better. Every day is a new day to do better.
If you choose to rescue a bird, make sure you are giving them the best avian medical care. Be sure you have enough money to pay for vet bills. Annually I spend between $15,000 to $20,000 on vet care. It saddens me to see people stepping up to "rescue" a bird but not having money to give them the medical care they need.
13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?
While I love everyone I have. I would stick to one species and that would be Macaws. They are easy to read and very entertaining.
14. What other hobbies do you have?
I love concerts, travelling and our trailer that we go to on weekends. That gives us a chance to focus just on our dogs without the cockatoos trying to steal their attention lol
15. Anything else you would like to share?
IF you choose to purchase a bird, be sure you are able to see where they come from. If an aviary is "closed to public" be suspicious. There are so many deadly diseases in aviaries.
If you want a bird, the best place to start is volunteering at a rescue, get to know them. If that is not a possibility check kijiji, craigslist etc.
Do not buy birds online, they are scammers.
Do not accept invites to bird groups, they are scammers.
Do not send money online for a deposit for a bird.
If you rehome them, I know it sounds terrible but there are bird flippers that disguise themselves as a nice family or rescue. They will sell your bird's cage, they will sell your bird for higher then they paid. So don't give them away. Put a price on them. Check their house, where will they live? Anyway, that is it!!
