What a nightmare. I am sorry that such a brutal thing was witnessed. Seeing a beloved companion that way is heartbreaking. Especially when it is unexpected...an 8' fence is no small feat to scale... Crazy. I am truly sorry for your loss.

Thank you, everyone. We're still quite numb and filled with so much grief over her horrific death. She was SO sweet. She loved to preen him and cuddle up underneath his arm. They loved each other so much.
The plant is a gardenia. He wanted to honor her with something that created beautiful fragrant white flowers.

My son has been very busy designing and building sides and a roof for Penny's enclosure so this will never happen again. He's using cattle panels, so it'll be a solid barrier of protection from coyotes.
Once he's completed the enclosure he plans on getting another duck so Penny won't suffer from loneliness. He located a waterfowl farm in our state that raises pekin ducks year round. Apparently they ship them right after they hatch, so he'd be getting an itty bitty duckling.

Personally, I'd also put a camera on it that would notify you of movement.

I spent years on a farm...... sounds like you have critters around you.

A fence isn't 100% safe. A camera would help ease his mind.

I'm so very sorry. What a devastating thing to have happen, let alone witness. I love the Gardenia memorial. Prayers for healing for you both. :sorrow::sadhug2:
