Thank you, everyone, for sending your comforting support. This was a ROUGH day. My son is trying to keep himself focused on keeping Penny safe, but pockets of overwhelming grief have been pouring out. His love for that duck was immeasurable.
He's always referred to Daisy as his daughter.

Our fence is 8 feet tall and he scaled it effortlessly.

What a nightmare. I am so sorry for both your losses. I hope Penny isn’t too stressed out. It must be so scary to have those predators right in your garden with your beloved ducks, I can’t imagine.

My son slept on the floor of his room last night next to Penny. He said that Penny was cuddled up against him all night long. :sad2:

We had a ridiculous amount of rain this past week. So much so that our entire back yard became flooded. My poor son can't find a piece of ground that doesn't fill back up with water as he attempts to prepare her final resting place.

Omygosh! I am so sorry or your son and poor Daisy. I knew coyotes could scale 6 foot but not eight! They are bold and it doesn’t matter if it’s day or night. It was just two or three weeks ago a coyote grabbed a two year old child and started dragging her off until her father heard her cry. He was right there unloading his car with his back turned. It was all over the news. Animal control needs to trap or dart that animal since it’s coming back to your yard.

I had to google how to keep a coyote from going over a “6” foot fence knowing yours is 8 foot high. I found this site that sells coyote rollers that install on top of a fence. It’s a great concept. Hope I copied the link right and I will try to find some better videos that show how it works.

I'm very sorry to hear this. I hope the coyote isn't rabid. It may return.

Thank you for this! My son is planning on building a cattle panel roof for his enclosure tomorrow. There's an area we haven't figured out how to enclose, and this looks like it will work! Thank you so much for taking the time to research and share this with me. So appreciative!

I actually googled coyote roller fences and found quite a few YouTube videos on how to build them and these people do them well. I didn’t know what type of fence you have and thought it would be better for you to browse so I don’t load too many videos. There are a lot of people who have dogs and cats that jump fences and they use these too. When their front feet hit that roller it spins and they can’t get the leverage to climb over.

I'm so terribly sorry for your loss :sorrow: Its heartbreaking.

I'm not an expert but I would be more concerned that someone is feeding them. I know that's been a problem in lots of different places. I've read news stories of coyotes attacking people and it was mostly likely they lost theit fear of people because they were being fed. When the lose that fear of people they can become quite dangerous. Most stories I've heard are them attacking people while they're walking their dogs.
