Crackling sound while breathing? (Sad update #7)

My cat got a hold of a sparrow. When I found it it had a single puncture wound on its back and blood on its nostrils. I believe it also has a broken wing.

It makes a strange 'crackling' sound, kind of like gently scrunching a plastic bag, every couple seconds. It doesn't match the frequency of its breathing though. Does anyone know what it might be?

It's quite lively otherwise, for now.

You must get it to wildlife rehab or veterinarian quickly. Cats carry pasteurella bacteria in their mouths and on claws. The infection can kill birds quickly, even in less than 24 hours . Regardless of the damage to the bird, the bacteria is deadly to them .the quicker you act getting care the better the odds the bird survives

@Pixiebeak not sure about your wildlife services there but here they won’t take in birds unless they’re native species. Best to take it to the vet and leave it with them I think.

Nowhere will take a sparrow unfortunately. It's sad, but if infection does occur there's nothing I can do.

Yes that's the case, nowhere will take it.

There are a lot of native sparrows . A lot of our native sparrows look very similar to the invasive sparrow . Are you sure it is an invasive species?

UPDATE: It's exactly 12 hours since finding it and sadly the bird didn't make it. It was very active up until the last 4 or so hours. I don't know, but I believe it succumbed to pasteurella bacteria from the single puncture wound.

Yes they can die within hours. This bacteria has a doubling time of about 30 min.
it's a good reminder and heads up for people
thank you for trying to help.
