Thanks everybody!

The vet hasn't done any testing on Zazzy because he wanted her to start antibiotics first so that we dont waste time waiting for the diagnostic and then start treating it. Since she is eating better and not throwing up, we are going to take her to the specialist tomorrow for a variety of diagnostics, (xray, poop test, blood work).

Zazzy weights 56g where she should weight 100g, or 80g the least. The problem is we never knew how much she weighted in the first place , we've only had her for 10 months, but she lived in a cage at PJ pets for 2 years. She probably had an underlying issue with digestion or processing food when we bought her, but then again 10 months is enough time for all that weight loss too, even though I think we are giving her a better diet than she had at the pet store. I feel horrible that we didnt know how much she weighted when we bought her, its something we should have known!

Ginger thanks for the supplements I will be looking for them today! I think we are going to try and give her a bit of small grounded pallets see if she'll eat it. I am afraid of her eating only fruits, so i try to trick her and dip the fruits in the formula but she is too smart. We gave her a bit of an almond yesterday and she ate it with no problem.

Hopefully I will have more happy updates for you guys soon!

Sweetheart,

I don't want to alarm you but please make sure you test for PDD.

I have a digital postal scale (you can get the small ones that go up to 3 lbs at Wal Mart for about $20). We usually set Penny (WBC) on it once per week. When I was little and we had an under-the-weather keet, my mom put a thin dish towel on the cage with a lamp behind it for heat. A heating pad might be safer though. Hope Zazzy feels better today!

I'm glad she's doing better. I also think she should be tested for bornavirus especially with such a severe weight loss.

I read about that too and I am praying its not! Although we always thought zazzy was an odd one. She just learned her to fly well, she was very sloppy before but we thought that is because she was caged for 2 years, and didnt know how to fly. She seems less clumsy now though! So I am hoping its not that! Especially because I have a bird Ryo who lives with me, Zazzy is my boyfriends bird. Whatever the issue with zazzy is i just want her to have a happy time with us for as long as she lives! In the meantime, even if Zazzy doesnt have PDD I hope they find a cure for it!

Zazzy is a Fiery-shouldered conure, right? 56g is definitely on the low end, but it's not unheard of. Most adult FSCs aren't going to be above 75g...certainly not 100g. Is your vet basing this on feeling her keel bone?

Sanja,
There is a pink disc called " snugglesafe", its a round pink disc, that you microwave, and it keeps the disc nice and warm for hours, I used this disc, when I had baby birds, I bought it in a petshop. heres website www.snugglesafe.co.uk i used to line the disc, with a few paper towels, and made a comfy warm spot for my babies. Hope Zazzy continues to get better.

This sounds like good news. I am not sure what the vet based it on but her weight is still alarming. I bought a scale as suggested, and she was so curious about it she stepped on it without us having to force her. The scale read 64g! the scale should be correct and if it is i am very happy she is weighing a bit more. she had absolutely no food in her crop or stomach probably. She has been eating a lot, we even gave her some pellets in apple juice and she eat it with no problem, but we are primarily feeding her fruits. She even pooped more solid which is great! Her poop looks very normal now,she seems to be pooping all the time, and she is back to her loud self. She seems to have a lot of energy when she bites and looks a lot better! the vet also called to check in and said he is very happy with the way she is responding to the food and medicine but that he thinks we shouldnt take zaza to the specialist just yet untill she gets a little more better, but we think we need to find out what is wrong so we know we are treating the right thing!

ill update everyone when we get back from the vet tomorrow!

I'm glad to hear she's eating better! Hopefully it is all uphill from here on out. My Fiery-shouldered conure is such a little piggy, it would be a huge red flag if he lost his appetite. :hug8:

We went to the specialist today, and had some blood work done, the results should be in next week. The vet said that zazzy should weight about 70g, she weighted 60g today, but that she isnt as underweight as the other vet said and only suggested she gain 5 to 10g. she also said she thinks the vet mistaken zazzy as being her way to anemia because her beak looked pale, but that she actually has a white paley beak neutrally. all in all the doc says zazzy is looking good! :) i will update you once we get the results back. your support has been great guys! thank you all so much!

Hi Everybody!

So we got the resusults and Zazzy is completley healthy! :dance4: turns out she had toxic poisoning from the lamp she was licking, she swallowed a little piece, and it probably had zinc or copper or lead in it so it made her sick. Luckily she threw it all up before it got anywhere where it could do damage. We threw the lamp out and will have to be even more cautiouse! these little buggers are so sneaky and curious no matter how much you want over them, they will try and get into trouble. Zazzy is eating well now, loves her treats and fruits, and is gaining weight slowly.

We are so relieved, and thankful that you guys helped us out throughout this whole ordeal. It was a hard week, that will hopefully never repeat!

I don't like that the first vet told you there's nothing you could do if she won't eat. Vets can keep a sick bird there and tube feed them. I'm so glad zazzy is ok now though!
