My conure just woke up from being put under 2 hours ago. The vet gave me
metacam and buprenorphine, but they did not tell me if they already gave her a dose. They are closed now.

I really don't want her to be in pain, but i also don't want to give her the medicine and it be too much for her.

In your experience, do vets give the animal an initial pain killer and we continue on with the set recommended schedule? (12 hours) or should we medicate them right aways?

thank you

That's really a good question.

Sif has had 3-surgeries. Each one they gave her medication for pain after. It keeps them calmer and helps them to keep from undoing whatever the vet just did. Unless your conure seems in an inordinate amount of pain, I would probably hold off. Though depending where you are it’s probably already been 12h since surgery. :)
