Confused about bird sounds

I have had my male cockatiel for about 3-4 weeks. I am new to owning a bird and I am confused about some of the sounds he makes. He will go near and eat out of my hand, but he will not step on it. Whenever I try to pet him, he makes a weird squawking noise and starts pecking at my hand. Please help because I don't know what to do about it.

Welcome to the Avenue :)

Some things take time, like our birds plucking up the courage to step on our hands. Let him do it in his own time ;) Some birds don't like to be petted, others grow to like it over the years.
Here is a great thread for you, Some things to do with a new bird....

So until you learn his sounds, pay attention to the body language. Pecking at your hand is a way to say he is not okay with that yet. :)
