Concussion!? *Update - Page 3*

Beanie got spooked and hit a door at full flight speed! :(

- It didn't knock him out.
- He can still perch.
- He is very quiet and docile.
- He will accept head scratches.
- He just wants to sit still.
- He regurgitated afterward (onto a perch - did this once only).
- He ate some honey (thought the sugar might help with shock).
- He preened my eyebrows afterward.
- Not playful at all.
- It is like he is a different bird; not vocal or energetic at all.

I've put him into his cage and turned off the light. He is perching in his usual sleep spot.

I've felt his keel bone and this is all fine. His beak is still intact. I can see no blood.

What more can I do?

I need some reassurance. :( I have read some information about bird concussions and now I'm worried that Beanie has internal bleeding (maybe on the brain).

Oh my goodness! I am sending healing energy your way. I hope he will be just fine. Any way you can get him to an avian vet?

How about what Gary always suggests, until he can get on the thread. Keep him warm, give some pedialite or gatorade 50/50 with water. Keep him warm and hydrated.

Thank you!

Beanie had a drink of water almost directly after hitting the door. He is being kept warm and in a quiet and dark place.

I just checked up on him and he is still perching fine and sleeping.

Good to hear Kelsey. That's really all you can do for the moment until the vet opens. Let us know what happens. :hug8:

He needs to see a vet ASAP for an xray of his head. Even if he seems fine he needs to go, because several birds with this injury died later.

How long is it a public holiday? Can you call your vet and leave a message?

Do NOT keep him warm!!

This is a big mistake people make after a bird hits something. My vet and I had this discussion after Diego flew full speed into a mirror.

Warm makes the internal swelling worse.

Dark and quiet is ok.

Into the vet if lethargic or sleepy.

Don't worry, he is not being kept warm artificially! Luckily I did read that on the 'net before I pulled out the heat mat. :)

He is warm because it is the usual Queensland weather (warm) and he is inside and and his cage is covered with a blanket (like every night). I do not think I have to keep him cold, do I? Room temperature is fine?

He was not sleepy after the knock and I wouldn't describe his behaviour as lethargic. Just... docile. He perked up when I covered him up for the night and he ran over to the door.

What are some signs of bleeding on the brain?

Debbie, how did your vet know that Diego was ok after hitting the mirror?

My vet told me to look for clumsiness, lethargy, vomiting. He said it can show up as long as 24 hours later.

Hi, here is information from on of my avian medical books, Clinical Avian Medicine.

Head Trauma
This is most often seen in free-flying birds encountering a
ceiling fan or sliding glass doors. Cranial trauma may
cause neurologic clinical signs. Prednisolone sodium succinate
is a rapid-acting steroid that helps decrease central
nervous system swelling. Dexamethasone sodium phosphate
also can be given (2 mg/kg IM once). Head trauma
cases should be placed in quiet, dark places with no
heat. Minor cases usually recover within 24 to 48 hours
