Been meaning to post this for awhile now, but keep forgetting. I clean the air filters under the sleep cages every 6-8 weeks, and each of my two medium cockatoos have their own filter.

Here's a before of the dirty filter:

It's hard to see how intensely bad it is until the dust layer is disturbed:

The prefilled caught most of it, but the odor filter was also pretty full:

(Oops hit post before I was done!)

The HEPA filter caught most of the rest that snuck through:

It's easier to see how bad the HEPA filter is when comparing to the new replacement:

After replacing the charcoal filter and cleaning the prefilter it looks a lot better!

Keep in mind that both of the air filters under the sleep cages were this clogged after a month and a half. Lems is probably responsible for 3/4 of the total dust production and moulting season makes it a bit extra on the dust factor, but not by much. All this for only 2 nor-very-big birds and I have to change the filters 5-6 times per year!

Cockatoo and cockatiel dust is something else! Everything in my bird room is covered in a layer of powder, even with two filters running.

Coincidental timing, I am sitting here sneezing- which mean it's time to change the air filter in the room Milton is in and saw your post. My filter looks the same. I have to change Milton's probably every 3-4 weeks.

@sunnysmom that is a lot of filter changes!

It makes sense to me now that other birds can react so strongly to big cockatoo dust levels.
