So as i said in a previous thread (Latest Rescue + Story )
i just rescued a 2.5 years old cockatiel this morning.
when the previous owner dropped her of, he mention she has "something going on with her beak" but that i doesn't affect her eating abbility and that she never needed to haved her beak trimmed at the vet or anything.
from what i can tell, the lower part of her beak goes over the upper part when she closes her mouth and it caused the lower part of her beak to look difformed.
My question is: can this affect her long term ?

Sometimes birds get malformed beaks; can happen with handfeeding, in the nest, etc. Usually as long as they are maintained it's not an issue. I personally would not want to keep the lower mandible longer unless my vet had a compelling reason to leave it alone.

thanks for the feedback, because she arrived only this morning i didn't bring her to my vet yet but ill definetly ask him when i bring her ! i think he will have to check if it is possible to trim the lower beak without causing injury or damage.

Yep, Maui gets a trim every 2-3 weeks. She eats, plays and bosses just fine.

Hers grows steady but perhaps yours has been able to keep it down? Keep an eye on it and your vet can help you along the way with whatever works for her. Maui’s lower beak gets extra thick growth on it so she can’t break it off herself.

Ripley has a scissor beak so he sometimes has a longer lower mandible. Then he starts chewing and wears it down :) without chewing he would need a trim every 6 to 8 weeks

i just looked it up it's a serious condition ! :wideyed::wideyed: post surgery articles are very very interesting !!! and thank you for saying this it actually helps to know that some birds actually kind of self treat themselves like yours lol , i hope that the vet finds her condition manageable without too much intervention.

So Tweets did have her vet appointment and here is what happened:

she had a full check up
blood work
and beak trim with anesthesia

Her weight isn't so bad considering and apparently despite her cheap seed only diet she had until now she is in pretty good health :bliss:
the beak trimm intervention took less then 15 minutes lol so fast !!!
and her blood showed no sign of liver diseise and other illnesses :loveshower:
