HI i too have a cockatiel with the same problem - we were up in perth for family illness in hospital and upon return from there noticed that our birds eye was swollen with a white mass to the front of eye which had pushed her eye ball back as such, my wife took to the vet in albany wa but was told their is not vet in albany who specialises in birds.

He put a small hole in the top and drained the fluid, over the next couple of days we constantly cleaned the area and i continued to drain the area that continued to swell as the pics above.

After a couple of days i noticed a large hard white mass which after a bit of squeezing was able to remove it did leave a rather big hole which we flushed with saline and continued to monitor. It healed fully within 2 days.

Now as of this morning the same thing has happened to her other eye i was able to remove the white mass but too me it also looks like a little red ball of fluid is just infront of the eye itself and was wondering is this just because of the swelling / redness???????????? I have attached a picture of her eye to see if anyone could help in any possible things it may be or assist in medicial treatment besides the saline we are already administering to her.

She is drinking eating and seems exactly as she was before all this happened - we will continue to clean etc and ill try and get in to see the vet tomorrow.

Re: Swollen & Red Eye

Oh my goodness! That looks very serious and painful! Please get your bird to an avian vet ASAP! She may need oral meds besides eye drops. It could be due to bacterial infection or a sinus infection. The tear ducts also could be infected.

Re: Swollen & Red Eye

Oh man those pics are making my eyes water & my heart hurt.

I have saline solution that I keep on hand at all times, it's great, natural & safe.

Good luck to you both!

I also have had a couple of Tiels have this happen to them! I got exactly what was described out and it was a seed that had gotten into the nasal passages and came out between the eye/nares...
What state are you in and we can help you find a avian vet...this bird needs antibiotics to help with the infection.

ADDING this information:
A large sinus known as the infraorbital sinus, surrounds the eye and extends into the upper and lower beak. This sinus opens upwards (dorsally) into the middle and caudal nasal conchae. Because this sinus has a dorsal and not a ventral (downward) opening, it is very difficult for any infection of the infra orbital sinus to drain.

The infraorbital sinus also communicates with the cervicocephalic air sac. This air sac is not a pulmonary air sac and extends along the neck and back of the skull. The nasal cavity filters inhaled airborne particles by means of mucus and small hair-like cilia. These particles enter the nares and are directed by the cilia through the choana (
Inside the bones of the bird head are the sinuses and concha. These are hollow spaces normally, but with infection, they may become clogged with liquid, mucus, abscess material or debris. One sinus is found behind the eye, which is why some birds with respiratory and sinus infection may develop swelling and discharge from the eye.
Seeds can get up in this area) and are then swallowed. Inhaled air is warmed and moistened by the nasal cavity.

“Choanal papillae” as defined by Avian Medicine: Principles and Applications, Ritchie, B.W., Harrison, G.J. and Harrison, L.R., Winger Publishing, Inc. Lake Worth, Florida, USA, 1994, p. 344-
“The choanal slit is visible as a median “V”-shaped cleft in the palate. There is species variation in the width of the choanal

I'm sorry I can't add any helpful advice but I'm really glad you are going to take her to a vet tomorrow! It's great that she is still behaving normally in the meantime. Please let us know how it goes at the vets.

Usually a swollen and red eye is the first sign of psittacosis, BUT reading on, you said there is a white mass, so it may not be.. I would have a test done just to rule it out. (one of my Cockatiels went through the same thing, and it turned out to be psittacosis).

In the first photo, there is something in her eye, something little can irritate their eye a lot. If you have been flushing it, but it is not helping as such, you need to go and get antibiotics for her eye. Good luck and keep us updated, poor girl, it looks very painful!
