My 8 year old cocktail Theo unfortunately had a growth that required his entire wing to be removed. He adjusted quite well under the circumstances but now less than 1 year later I'm being told he needs to have his other wing removed. I don't know what to do.... How do you provide care for a bird missing both wings? Is there any other possible treatment? Any help is appreciated!

That is very unfortunate.
I would imagine it will be similar to how people care for pet quails... do some research on that. Ramps, very low branches, unique substrate, etc.

He has another tumor/growth developing in his wing that goes through his wing. Although it's benign it can become cancerous if left untreated but it cant be removed without the wing being removed(so they say). The vet is not an avian specialist and I'm not exactly "flush with cash" so i can't afford a specialist but i was hoping to get some advice for possible treatment or ideas to ask the vet to look into.
Why are they wanting to amputate the other wing? It's hard to advise when we don't know what the condition is.

I am sorry to hear about Theo. If you check the special needs parrot section, Special Needs Crossing , you will find some information about setting up a cage for birds that need help.

More or less where are you located? Someone on AA may know of another vet in your proximity who might give you a 2nd opinion.

I adopted a pair of tiels under strange circumstances but the female had a growth on her wing which prevented her from flying. When I took her to the vet, Dr. Scott had said that IF the growth had been removed at the very start she would still have been able to fly. He didn't recommend amputation because she was elderly and he didn't think she'd survive. What he did do to help balance her was to trim the feathers on the wing with the growth so that it wasn't as cumbersome. BUT I'm just telling the story of one of my tiels. I'll try to find the vet's write-up to see if it mentions what the growth was.

She and her OH were extremely bonded to the point where if they were separated, even being able to see each other and less than a foot apart, she would get hysterical. Dr. Sakas, who also saw her had said the same thing.
