Urgent Cockatiel ate dried hair dye?

My poor cockatiel, Popcorn, possibly ate hair dye that had dried on the mirror he likes to perch on. Though I have a feeling he simply pecked on it and nothing went into his beak, I still feel very worried. I do not recall when or what brand the hair dye was as it was my mother using it. For now, I have washed it off his beak thoroughly and gave him plenty of water to drink to flush anything out. I have been keeping an eye on him as well.

In the case he did indeed eat it, what should I do while I am unable to see the vet? I have been in hysterics about it the past few hours :( Thank you for any advice. If it helps, he is 2 years old.

Try your best to get to the vet ASAP, do you need help finding a vet? There are some sites you can use to help you locate one.
Maybe you could try and ask you mum what the dye was and get the ingredients list to take with you.
Monitor your bird closely, but if he has ingested the dye then this is an emergency.

This is what I read about ingestion:

"Unintentional ingestions of dyes by children usually involve small amounts. Temporary hair dyes, like the kind used at Halloween, should only cause minor irritation to the mouth, some nausea, and maybe some vomiting. Toxicity is increased with semi-permanent and permanent dyes because of their alkalizing and oxidizing agents. More severe irritation of the mouth, throat, and stomach would be expected, and more severe vomiting is also likely. Depending on the product, a chemical burn is possible. Even small amounts of products with primary intermediates like PPD can cause life-threatening allergic reactions including swelling of the tongue and throat and difficulty breathing."

You could contact the ASPCA Poison Control line for direction: Animal Poison Control

Thank you so kindly for the links. Sadly, none of these links show vets in my country (Japan). I do know a few around my area, but a large majority are open only on Wednesdays and more specialized on dogs and cats rather than birds. The only Avian specialist I could find is a little far and only open on Wednesday. It’s very late and so I cannot get hold of him by phone call currently, but I still will do so as soon as possible.

Maybe if you call a normal vet they can help you find a vet that can care for your bird?
If you really struggle finding an avian certified vet, then a vet that will see your bird would be an option - sort of, any vet better than no vet.
Good luck - I hope your bird will be ok!

Yes, you are right. Though I did locate one specialist, I will try to find some others just in case. No one is answering back since it’s so late, but I will attempt again as quickly as possible when they are able to. I think I will keep an eye on Popcorn the whole night, I’m so scared of something happening.

Thank you so much; I hope he will be okay too :( I feel horrible for being so careless.
