Hi,

We are hoping to add another bird into our family (we currently have 2 tame budgies)

I'd like a bird who is interactive, is happy to socialize with the family, and would get along with budgies.

Can anyone give me some insight on linnies vs cockatiels.

We have our name down on a waitlist for a handraised cockatiel in our area but have also enquired about a baby linnie (parent raised hen)

Does anyone here have both birds and can give me some insight as to what it is like to own both?

Thanks

I have neither so know nothing but basic on them so tagging people with the species you mentioned
Linnie people: @Ali @Dona
Cockatiel people: @Khizz @Ember-Tiel
Problem with linnies is that they are hard to get but in the end you should get a species you like better :)
Thank you! We have access to both but are having a hard time deciding! Hope this forum helps make up our decision

I can't say anything about linnies, but cockatiels and budgies are a good mix. They GENERALLY get on well together and are both old world parrots, meaning the dust they give off don't bother each other. I don't know how much budgie dust will bother a linnie, as they aren't as dusty as cockatiels are. Just food for thought :)

I raised my kids with a female cinnamon pearl cockatiel. She was hand raised and I finishing up the hand feeding. She was sweet and friendly, although a bit shy. She was happy to passed all around between the kids each day after school and often joined them at the table for snacks. She learned some sweet tricks on request, being an "eagle" with wings out and tucking her head back if I said "Are you sleeping?" Twice during her long life we had some budgies and she got along well with them.

I have a 2 1/2 year old Linnie now. Gigi is a joy. She is very friendly and will land on my grandchildren's heads and shoulders often. She loves her people but is hand shy, which is common for Linnies. I have written expensively about her in the Linnie section. I'm not sure how a Linnie would get along with budgies. If the budgies are male, better chances I bet, since female budgies can be pretty bossy. I'm not aware of anyone on the site with that combo at home. Also adding that Linnies are very social and are often kept as pairs. We have our girl as a single but we are retired and able to give her lots of attention.

I love both species and think they are wonderful family companion birds.

:welcome2: I don't have much experience with Linnies but if your looking for a more relaxed bird that would fit well with your budgies then a cockatiel could be a good fit. I found female cockatiels to more clam while males are a lot more energetic and can sometimes whistle or sing. :tielf:

Cockatiel would be better than a Linnie for your needs expressed. Linnies love to be with other Linnies and mix will with each other.

I don't know a lot about Linnies, but it sounds like a Cockatiel would be a good fit for you. Many Cockatiels and Budgies can get along (but keep in mind it really just depends on the individual birds.) I have a cockatiel and he is actually really bonded to his little budgie companion and they do great together.

Thanks for your reply. This is the little girl we are considering. She has been hand raised though. I'm hoping in not taking on an impossible task of taming her!

How did you find taming GiGi... did she respond well to the human interaction? Our little bird we are considering was parent raised so hasnt had much experience with humans yet. She has also only just left the nest.

Are they similar to budgies with the hand taming process. This is what I am struggling with, deciding to go with the unknown (linnies) or to buy a hand raised cockatiel (already socialised).

We want to make the right choice as it is a long term commitment for both breeds.

Appreciate hearing your thoughts?

Gigi was hand raised by a wonderful breeder and was friendly from the start. She was interested in us right away and that has never changed. She had a great step up that has gradually stopped. Now she will only step up in an unusual place, like the floor, bathroom after a bath or the vet's office. Otherwise when I offer a finger, she flies away. But she comes to us all the time, landing on our shoulders, laps and knees, and then hangs out for a while, preening, sharing an apple, playing and napping. She does some fun tricks whistles/actions on request and thrives on our enthusiastic attention. She's a resilient bird that doesn't seem to hold a grudge or worry too much. I have said before that she's just the right combination of sweet and sass. So friendly and wild as can be. I guess just being a bird. I can't recommend the species more highly. But I'm not sure how it would go with a parent raised bird.

My budgies were pet shop birds and never very friendly. They would take food from me. I never made any more progress, but I might have given up too soon. They seemed to have a good life in a big cage and with each other.

And again, my cockatiel experience was great. First we had a male with a chronic respiratory infection that we rescued and needed meds every day. He was a trooper and remained very friendly during his short life. My husband was finishing school at the time and every paper he wrote had a a few little Echo Boy bites on it. He spent hours on hub's shoulder while he studied. So so sweet. We got Aja, a female, when my first child was 2 and she was a wonderful friendly girl, spending lots of time with the kids and their friends as they grew. Her size was good with little ones. She lived to be 17, seeming perfectly healthy and playful the final day, then I found her dead at the bottom of the cage in the morning. We were stunned. But it was a good happy life for her. She was a joy.

You have a big decision.

Sorry, I missed my tag! Hardly surprising with my 50 notifications this morning!

I think Dona has covered everything, linnies are lovely birds, and whilst mine is not hand tame, he does enjoy the company. Good luck with your decision!

One of my linnies that I got when he was 4 months old was parent raised with no human handling. He caught on pretty quickly and it was much less of an issue that I thought it would be. (I also got a parent raised 3 year old with no human handling, which has been a completely different time frame!). Both are extremely sweet birds, both are males. The only thing to really keep in mind is that in general linnies don't like to be touched, although there are exceptions, so if you want a bird you definitely can give scritches to, a linnie may not be the right choice. I don't know anything about cockatiels so can't compare.
