I’ve been taking a much closer look at both of my new charges. I suspect that my boy Kuiper was chewed on, fussed at, attacked, by the other budgies in the cage at the rescue. One of the first things I noticed was that one of his flight feathers had been mangled. The rescue worker said that he did not look like that when he had his appointment with their vet. Now that I can take a good look, he has some chewed on bald spots on his head, and the wing feather looks barbered. What do you think? Vet appointment next Wednesday.

I noticed the straggly flight feather yesterday but thought it could have been a string from a toy behind. Also the feathers on the back of his head were standing up.

Until I saw the bald patches on his head I thought he came in like that. That looks plucked.

:sadhug2:

Poor guy. No wonder he was by himself. I guess the rescue did not see but they can;t see everything.

Does not look like serious damage but sure he;s glad to be safe in his own cage now eating millet.

His wings are clipped, too! I can’t wait until he has a good molt and gets his flights back! Same with Opie!

So my budgie people: how old with the dark eyes? One year give or take?

I thought I saw a hint of grey on the very outside i one pic but that might be the white of his eyeball. If they are all black most likely under 1 year but some mutations don't loose the black eye.

Could be 9 mo or so. Interesting to see if he will develop the gray. If he does then you know he is young under a year. If he is one of the mutations that eyes stay dark then you really can't tell age from eyecolor.

Well, my vet says little man is too skinny. He is 30 g. The vet record from the rescue said he was 38 g at that time, but I think that's a typo and that he was actually 28 g. He may be so small because he's been struggling to survive the NC fall and winter. He has had an x-ray and labs, and while he was out with anesthesia, the vet pulled that scraggly, chewed feather. He'll grow that one back pretty quick. I hope I can get him sleek and healthy!! The quarantine will continue for the full 30 days.

30 Grams...

So the 38 likely was a error as he;s no muscle man!

He'll fatten up munching on millet & all the new goodies.

Did vet guess age? Black eyes should be around 9 mo? ( unless he;s one of those mutations that keep black eyes but I already posted that)

30 days quarantine but its for the best to be on the safe side.:sadhug2:
