Hi there! I've owned my lovely female parrotlet for 2 years now and she is my first parrot I have taken care of. I wanted to check in and get any advice or just insight on my care with of her.

First off, I work part time, so I spend a good amount of time with her. I wake her up at 10am and put her to bed at 8/9pm. She hasn't shown any hormonal behavior like nesting etc.

We're bonded, and we go outside together, and went on a 2 month road trip in my camper van In the summer and did great. She flies in the backyard, mostly to the spot she likes to sunbathe in, and flies back to me when she's done. I don't worry about her... but should I? Is her enjoying the sun on her own worth the risk of potential dangers? It's always in open areas, which I figure is safer?

Another thing, I like to mess with her. Play with some crunchy paper, wrestle with her a little bit and grab her beak, and i tease her by poking her tail and what not. She gets sassy and bites me, but it doesn't bother me. Is it OK if I mess with her or am I hurting the trust she has in me? She'll run away and turn back to give me sass and go for a bite, but I figure she would fly away if it scared her? She's very brave and I love that about her, but I don't want to hurt her trust in me. I always go for kisses in mid wrestle and she kisses me back even after biting me right before, as my way to check in I guess and tell her we're just playing?

Thanks for reading! I'll also say she has alot of enrichment, and knows a good amount of tricks. I struggle though to get her to let me touch her, as I want to be able to inspect her incase of an accident. If anyone has tips on that I'd love to know! 20250312_141836.jpg

She sounds lovely! I’m just concerned about free flying a parrotlet. It seems risky.

Agree, I would be worried about her getting spooked and ending up lost, or getting snatched up by a bird of prey. Maybe you could take her out in a travel cage instead? Otherwise it sounds like she lives an awesome life! :)

I am impressed! My parrotlet is just shy of 2 years old and I wouldn't trust him outside, but it's great that she comes back to you. Did you train her that way or has she always been "obedient" in that way?
