Hi everyone!

In a few weeks, I will very likely be adopting a 6-7 year old ringneck parakeet. The name that he has is ok, but im not totally a fan.

What is your opinion on changing a bird's name?

Depends on the bird. Some know their names well and will not accept another, while others don't know it/don't mind. Ripley was "Bird" before I got him and there was no way I was keeping that lol

I agree it depends on the bird:) I would give it some time to figure out if he responds to his name, and if not change it. If he does respond to it a little, maybe a very similar name would work? One of my birds came with a name, he didn’t seem to know it but just in case I picked something that resembles his previous name.

You can try but remember the bird owns that name he has. I’m not a fan of Ruby (an aunt I have has the same name) for a male cockatiel but it’s the name he came with. I tried changing it for the last four years and finally I gave up. Besides with my IRN Jade and lovebird Quartz the name kind of works.

Maybe find a name that sounds similar?
