I've been reading an older thread about a BG named Joey. In it @Macawnutz talked about two centers with feathers. Could you explain more? I'm just not getting it. Thanks

I haven't seen the thread, but I wonder if the centres are a kind of repository of feathers. There's a process called imping which is used to replace broken or cut feathers. Basically a replacement feather is bonded, using a small rod of bamboo and glue, into the shaft of the broken feather. The replacement feather must be a very very close match to the original and even then, it might not cope with the stresses placed on it during take off, flight and landing.

Repositories exist so that it's easier to find a close match: species, size, the exact placement on the wing and so on are all critical in identifying a suitable match.

This is a short introduction:

This is a detailed set of instructions aimed at vets

There is no center tail feather. They are pairs so there are two center tail feathers. ;)

Do you collect her moulted feathers Carol? Do you do anything nice with them?

Good, I can stop looking for Koko's center tail feather.
Hehe I saw your post yesterday, looked up the thread and looked for Frankie's 2 centers.
As for cockatoos, yes Dolly has a preen gland. I noticed that was also mentioned.

I keep them in a vase. I'm not sure what to do with them, maybe some day I'll think of something. :)
