1. How did you acquire your bird?
Rupert was adopted May 8th, 2017, from Open Wings Sanctuary. They have since been absorbed in to Phoenix Landing.
2. What is your bird's name, species, age and sex?
Rupert is a male Green-cheeked Conure. According to his leg band, he was hatched in April 2014. He is six years old.
3. Does your bird do any special tricks?
He is really good at manipulating me in to giving him treats. He can step up and down, spin, wave, shake hands, do a loop-de-loop on a perch, and lie on his back. He's a decent mimic for a Conure. He clearly can say "watcha want?" and "what are you doing?" He will squeal when you wrestle with him. He has tried to copy Sherbie's whistle, but it just sounds like "wee-a-weet". He'll slurp at you if you're eating food and he wants some. He barks, too.
4. What are some of your bird's favorite foods?
Rupert is not a picky eater, and will try just about anything if you offer him a bite, except for leafy greens. He loves sweet peppers, corn, sprouts, carrot, berries, apples, bananas, yellow squash, zucchini, green beans, and broccoli.
5. What is the funniest thing your bird has done?
He's always doing little things that crack me up, but I'm easily amused. He has this tendency to get poofy (trying to look intimidating) and he'll rush at you, but he's clumsy and trips over his own feet - causing him to faceplant - which as you can imagine, is SO very threatening looking. He has accidentally vaulted himself over the edge of the cage doing this very thing, and he was so bewildered as to why he was on the carpet.
Other silliness:
His snake dance, holding food or toys in his foot and bonking himself in the head with it, chanting "chuwantchuwantchuwantchuwant" when he's hiding...
6. How has your bird enriched your life?
Rupert is such a sweet little guy. He cheers me up just by being his goofy self. He just wants to be loved on and be a part of the action.
7. What would you tell people who are considering this species?
GCCs are little clowns. You do need to set boundaries with them, just like with any animal. They can be a nippy species, but with positive reinforcement, that can be minimized quite a bit. Rupert is not typically very noisy, but every bird is different. They are very food motivated. You definitely need to continually make sure you're bird-proofing as much as possible, because they are very good at finding trouble.
Their morning poops are ridiculously big, and they are known for reverse-bootyscoot pooping.
8. What is the activity and noise level of your bird?
Rupert has only two or three "loud" calls; Bajaaaaaant! (flock call), Rap-bap-bap! (generally a distress call or extreme excitement), and KEK! (I'm scared!). He's actually a very quiet bird -- Sherbie is a lot more vocal than him by a long shot. Activity wise, Rupert does most of his chewing at night. He mostly plays with jingly balls and other foot toys during the day. He enjoys throwing things off of whatever surface he's on, just like a cat. You have to be careful what you leave out, because he will tip over cups and containers.
9. What are some of your bird's quirks?
He has the ability to fly, but prefers to take the scenic route. He'd rather climb, hop, and walk. Rupert likes to chew a lot of his toys in to round shapes. His girlfriend is a towel. He also likes to chew on my fingers as if they're pacifiers.
10. If your bird talks, what is the most surprising word or sentence it has said?
He only knows two phrases, so we just get variants or mixtures, such as "What're you what're you watcha want".
11. What is your bird’s favorite treat?
Favorite "junk foods" are sunflower seeds and millet. He'll do tricks for any food offered to him.
