It is with great pleasure that I announce the
Celebirdy for the month of January 2026
@KiMa27 's Benny
1. How did you acquire your bird? I adopted him through a wonderful bird rescue group in Portland, Oregon.
2. What is your bird's name, species, age and sex? Benny, Alexandrine Parakeet/Parrot, approximately 15 years old and he's male. Alexandrines are one of the few parrot species where the males and females have different coloring so we didn't have to do a DNA sex test.
3. Does your bird do any special tricks? Not yet, we are still working on getting him acclimated and healthy. Target training is certainly in his future though!
4. What are some of your bird's favorite foods? Zupreem Naturals, Roudybush California blend, nutriberries, carrots and apples
5. What is the funniest thing your bird has done? He gets so excited when taking a bath that he will dunk his head several times until it's soaked, then climb up the side of his cage and whip his head around 3-4 times, flinging water everywhere! Then he'll climb back down to the water bowl and start over again. It's adorable and hilarious!!
6. How has your bird enriched your life? Benny is my second Alexandrine so it's felt familiar and comfortable to have him join our flock. He is very gentle and so sweet that he just melts my heart each time I interact with him.
7. What would you tell people who are considering this species? They aren't very cuddly and neither of mine have liked to be held or petted, but they're very smart, inquisitive, loyal and not too noisy. They're good eaters and like to have lots to toys for chewing.
8. What is the activity and noise level of your bird? Benny hasn't been very active due to some health issues we're working through (he had to have an infected toe amputated and abdominal surgery since we've adopted him) but I expect he will be fairly active once he gets well. My other Alexandrine was frequently on the move throughout his entire cage so an extra-wide, large enclosure is important. He likes to chew so we give him lots of wood toys to chomp and cardboard to shred. We try to change out toys and layout frequently to keep his interest.
Currently Benny only makes 3 noises - two different whistles and a hoot. It's pretty cute and easy on the eardrums! My first Alexandrine had a loud call, but didn't use it often.
9. What are some of your bird's quirks? He's very afraid of hands so no petting his head!
10. If your bird talks, what is the most surprising word or sentence it has said? Nothing yet but we're hopeful!
11. What is your bird’s favorite treat? Pistachios or safflower seeds!
