My keet was bit by a cat and I took her into the emergency vet. The wound is small, but of course will cat bites their saliva is fatal. She gave me injections of Baytril to give her, but my question is will Baytril work? I know it is broad spectrum, but I assumed when I went in she would give a different medication as I had read online about other drugs given for cat bites. I have googled and one site says it is not enough, but a few others say it is commonly used.

Please clear the air? I would have asked her but it was an emergency visit and there was a dog waiting behind me to be seen. So far Butter seems to be doing better and is more alert, but hoping this will work as there is a 24 hour period for cat bites.

Thank you.

yes it will work..especially if they are injections..be vigilant about it and get your keet to an avian vet asap that is non emergency.

Usually Clavamox is given to birds for this. I am going to move your thread to 911 so it gets more exposure and hopefully some more experienced people will advise you.

Good Morning and thanks for taking your bird to a vet quicky.

Clavamox has been the antibiotic of choice for cat bites, Baytril will also work but does not have the reputation against, Pasteurella multocida infections, that Clavamox has.

This is my opinion: I would not medicate one of our small birds with Baytril injections when the oral antibiotic Clavamox is available and is said to be more effective and easier to administer. Baytril is listed for use against the bacterial, pasteurella multocida. Please confide in your local avian vet about the treatment they recommend.

She is doing very well. Back to her old self. This vet always gives baytril and is a stubborn gal. Are you saying there is a chance she will not make it with the baytril? This is my local avian vet and this is her recommendation. Thank you all for your concern. :)
