hi there,

i have heard about a few people using carabiners as locks on the cage doors for the big guys that know how to open them.

i just thought i'd share a story about carabiners. i posted this exact same thing in a different thread, but thought i'd make a separate thread, so more people could see it:

i would advise against using carabiners as locks.

i worked in a petstore years ago, and we had a grey that had his door locked with a carabiner. he was messing with it one day, and managed to open the carabiner, which then snapped shut, with the top part inside his lower beak, and the bottom part in the little cleft where his lower beak and "chin" come together. it got stuck like that, and he started SCREAMING. blood started spurting out of his mouth, and we rushed him to the vet. we couldn't get it off. the vet had to get it off, but it ended up cutting half of his tongue off. =(

so please, though it's probably rare, and i don't have any other solutions other than padlocks, which seem like maybe too much, i might reconsider carabiners as locks.

Oh my goodness. Thank you so much for the warning. I was thinking that we might need to do something with our Military that is a wizard at removing things. But after hearing this, I definitely won't. That poor baby.

whew! From the title I didn't know you were going to recommend against it, so I was coming to do so.
Carabiners are a bad idea for birds.
BTW I have 5 padlocks on my Goffins cage. It is not a big bother to get the key when you need to open and it is peace of mind to know he is safe in his cage when you are away.

Any type of item that is spring loaded is very dangerous, I made a comment about a customer that had toys hanging in there birds cage with carabiners and I got crusified.

Sorry if I see it as dangerous I am going to speak up, careful of some of the quick links there are some the are spring loaded.
